World Scrabble Championship 1997
The World Scrabble Championship 1997 was the fourth World Scrabble Championship. The winner was Joel Sherman of the United States. Format The World Scrabble Championship 1997 was held in the Stouffer Renaissance Mayflower Hotel, Washington, D.C., and was the second to be held in the United States. Eighty players played a Swiss tournament of twenty-one games each, with each player playing seven games on each of the first three days. The two top players from this tournament then played a best-of-five game final to decide who would be World Scrabble Champion 1997. Prize money was provided by the Milton Bradley Company, owned by the tournament's sponsor Hasbro, to a total value of $50,100. The winner received $25,000, the runner-up $10,000 and the remainder of the top twenty players received prizes down to $150. Brian Cappelletto
Brian Cappelletto (born 1969) is a Scrabble player who represents the United States in international competition. He was the runner-up at the inaugural World Scrabble Championship in World Scrabble Championship 1991, 1991 and won the event in World Scrabble Championship 2001, 2001. He also won the American National Scrabble Championship in 1998, and was the runner-up in 2008 and 2010. Cappelletto appeared in Stefan Fatsis's book ''Word Freak (book), Word Freak'', which follows the stories of several of Scrabble's top players in North America. Fatsis calls him "Scrabble's first child prodigy". The documentary ''Scrabylon'', about the 2001 World Championship, also features Cappelletto as a central character. Adam Logan
Adam Logan (born 1975 in Kingston, Ontario) is a research mathematician and a top Canadian Scrabble player. He won the World Scrabble Championship in 2005, beating Pakorn Nemitrmansuk of Thailand 3–0 in the final. He is the only player to have won the Canadian Scrabble Championship five times (1996, 2005, 2008, 2013 and 2016). He was also the winner of the 1996 National Scrabble Championship, North America's top rated player in 1997, and the winner of the Collins division of the 2014 North American Scrabble Championship. Since his competitive career began in 1985, Logan has played nearly 2200 tournament games, compiling a winning percentage of over 68%, and earning just $100,000 in prize money. Mark Nyman
Mark Nyman (born 14 October 1966) is an English professional Scrabble player originally from London, England and now a resident in Cheshire. At the end of 2002, he was rated 205 and was top-rated in the ABSP ratings. As at 7 September 2015 he is rated 200. His 27 consecutive tournament game wins is an ABSP record. He is most widely known as the first (and, until Craig Beevers' victory in 2014, only) British player to win the World Scrabble Championship, which he accomplished in 1993. He married in 2004 and has two children, Max and Kizzy. Nyman played Canadian Joel Wapnick in the World Scrabble Championship 1993 final, in which he came back from 2-1 behind to win 3-2, including winning one game having been 174 behind.
