World Hereford Council
The World Hereford Council is the international breeding authority on Hereford cattle, existing for the promotion of breed excellence and the cultivation of global trade in Hereford genetics. Originally based in England, at the Hereford Cattle Society, the Council was established in 1951 as a response to the increasingly widespread international export and breeding of Hereford cattle, and the need to maintain a global authority connecting Hereford cattle to the original English herd book. The Headquarters of the Council are based in the country of residence of the Secretary General (Uruguay, as of 2015), and move with each new election. Hereford Cattle
The Hereford is a British breed of beef cattle originally from Herefordshire in the West Midlands of England. It has spread to many countries – there are more than five million purebred Hereford cattle in over fifty nations worldwide. The breed was first exported from Britain in 1817, initially to Kentucky. It spread across the United States and Canada, through Mexico, to the great beef-raising countries of South America. Today Herefords dominate from Australasia to the Russian steppes, including Israel, Japan, continental Europe and Scandinavia, temperate parts of Australia, Canada, the United States, Kazakhstan and Russia, the centre and east of Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, and New Zealand, where they make up the largest proportion of registered cattle. Hereford Cattle Society
The Hereford Cattle Society (formerly the ''Hereford Herd Book Society'', also known as the ''Hereford Breed Society'') is the British breeding authority on Hereford Cattle, and the originator of the breed's herd book. Founded in 1878 as the Hereford Herd Book Society (under the patronage of Queen Victoria), the Herd Book for the breed was open between 1846 and 1886, since which point it has remained closed; the consequence of this is that all Hereford cattle in existence today can (and must) directly trace their lineage to a sire and dam recorded in the society's book. The current name has been used since 1996. Based on Offa Street in Hereford, the Society also originally housed the World Hereford Council, when it began as an offshoot organisation in 1951. American Hereford Association
The American Hereford Association is an organization in the USA that promotes Hereford cattle. It was founded in 1883 and operated out of the home of Charles Gudgel in Independence, Missouri. In 1899, it hosted the Hereford Association Cattle Show in a tent in the Kansas City stockyards. The show evolved into the American Royal, a livestock show, horse show, rodeo, and barbecue competition. From 1919 to 1953, its headquarters was at 300 W. 11th Street in Kansas City across the street from the Lyric Theatre. On October 16, 1953, Dwight D. Eisenhower presided over the opening of a new headquarters on Quality Hill in Kansas City overlooking the stockyards and the West Bottoms. The headquarters at 715 Kirk Drive included a famous restaurant but its most distinctive feature was fiberglass statue of a Hereford bull on a 90-foot pylon which became a landmark.
