World Curling Tour
The World Curling Tour (WCT) is a group of curling bonspiels featuring the best male, female, and mixed doubles curlers in the world. History The World Curling Tour was founded by former World Champion Ed Lukowich, with later assistance from John Kawaja. The World Curling Tour commenced in 1992, with men's events only at first. It replaced the "Canadian Curling Tour" held the previous season. The first season consisted of 48 events (with only one outside Canada), and was sponsored by Seagram's distillery. Teams earned points in every event with the top 30 qualifying for the season ending " V.O. Cup", today known as the Players' Championship. Its first president and CEO was Lukowich. The first two events were held on the first weekend of October 1992, the Red Carpet Classic in Regina, Saskatchewan and a qualifier for the Coca-Cola Classic in Winnipeg. Ed Lukowich
Edward R. "Ed" Lukowich (born March 1, 1946; nicknamed "Cool Hand Luke") is a former Canadian champion curler. Lukowich is a two-time Brier champion, having won the Brier Tankard for Alberta as skip of both the 1978 and 1986 Canadian championship teams. His team won the and placed third at 1988 Olympics when curling was a demonstration sport. Career Curling Born on March 1, 1946 in Speers, Saskatchewan, Lukowich was the Athlete Development Director from 2000 to 2009 of the United States Curling Association. He coached the Pete Fenson rink at the 2010 World Championship at Cortina d'Ampezzo to a 4th-place finish. Lukowich has written four books on curling and produced a 60-minute instructional video. The Hokkaido Bank Curling Classic is an annual bonspiel on the men's and women's World Curling Tour. It is held annually in early August at the Hokkaido Bank Curling Stadium in Sapporo, Japan. The Canadian Open, is an annual bonspiel, or curling tournament. It is one of the seven Grand Slams and four "majors" on the World Curling Tour, and the only one to use a triple knockout format. The National (curling)
The National, currently referred to as the Boost National for sponsorship reasons, is curling tournament that is one of the six events that are part of the Grand Slam of Curling tour, and one of its four "majors". Beginning in 2022, the event features 16 men's and 16 women's teams. The top 15 teams on the World Curling Federation's Order of Merit qualify, plus a "sponsors exemption". The 16 teams are divided into four groups of four teams, and the top eight teams overall advance to a single elimination playoff. In 2021, the event was a 16 team triple knockout event before the 8 team playoff. From 2015 to 2019, the event had 15 teams divided into three groups of five teams.
