De Nijlânnermolen, Workum
De Nijlânnermolen is a smock mill in Workum, Friesland, Netherlands. It has been restored to working order and is designated as a reserve mill. It is listed as a Rijksmonument. History ''De Nijlânnermolen'' was built in 1785. The first mill on this site was built in 1770. It had a sail span of 60 Dutch feet (). The mill drove a scoopwheel. It soon became apparent that this mill was too small due to insufficient pumping capacity. Following a major inundation in 1776, a new mill was built by millwright Widmer Sipkes in 1784-85. The mill had originally been built in 1770 and was moved here, being erected on the base of the existing mill. It had a sail span of 76 Dutch feet (). ''De Nijlânnermolen'' was worked by wind until 1950, when a diesel engine was placed in ''De Nijlânnermolen'' and a new, larger, Archimedes' screw was installed. Jopie Huisman
Jopie Huisman (18 October 1922 – 29 September 2000) was a Dutch autodidactic painter and rag-and-bone man. During his lifetime, he became known for his meticulous and realistic paintings. Huisman refused to sell any of his paintings. On 11 April 1986, Huisman opened his own museum. Biography Jopie Huisman was born on 18 October 1922 in Workum, Friesland. In 1939, he became a ceramics painter at the earthenware factory of Aurora. In 1942, he was arrested during a raid and put to work at a labor camp in Kassel, Germany. One day, he was looking at the sky and thought he saw a flock of geese. Suddenly the factory next door collapsed. The bombing of Kassel had started. Huisman managed to escape from the camp, and found refugee in Workum. In 1949, he married Eelkje de Boer, started a business, and a family. De Snip, Workum
De Snip is a smock mill in Workum, Friesland, Netherlands. It has been restored to working order. Designated as being held in reserve, it is listed as a Rijksmonument. History ''De Snip'' was built in the mid-19th century to drain a polder. A hollow post mill having previously stood on the site. Following a long period of dereliction, the mill was restored in 1974-45 by millwright Tacoma of Stiens, Friesland. The windhaft in the mill came from ''De Kolthofpoldermolen'', Oosterbierum, Friesland, which had burnt down on 13 December 1972. The mill formerly had a wooden windshaft. Southwest Friesland ( fy, Súdwest-Fryslân ) is a municipality in the Northern Netherlands, located in the province of Friesland. It had a population of 84,092 in August 2017. Ybema's Molen, Workum
Ybema's molen is a smock mill in Workum, Friesland, Netherlands. It has been restored to working order. Designated as being held in reserve, it is listed as a Rijksmonument. History ''Ybemas molen'' was built in 1899. It worked by wind until 1951 but was derelict by 1955 when it was restored by carpenter F de Groot of Ferwoude, Friesland at a cost of ƒ4,130.38. In August 1963, the mill was bought by the Gemeente Nijefurd for ƒ1. Further restorations were carried out in 1969 and 1981. In 1986, the mill was sold to the Molenstichting Nijefurd. By 1995, the Archimedes' screw had been removed. In 2006, the mill was fully restored. A new cast iron windshaft was fitted, replacing the previous wooden one. A new Archimedes screw was fitted and the mill made workable again. The mill was designated by Wetterskip Fryslân as being held in reserve. A sail broke on 27 November 2011. Hotze "Harry" Koch ( ; 22 October 1867 – 21 June 1942) was a Dutch-born American businessman who founded the ''Quanah Tribune-Chief'' newspaper. He was the father of Fred C. Koch (1900–1967), founder of Koch Industries. Early life and education Koch was born in the Dutch Frisian town of Workum, Netherlands. He was the second child of the physician Johan Anthon Koch (1836–1910) and Gatske Hotzes Jorritsma (1837–1876). Koch's paternal grandfather had been a shipowner from Sande in German East Frisia who had shipwrecked off the coast of Workum, where he eventually married the mayor's daughter. Koch's mother died during the birth of her eighth child, and his father remarried Petronella de Swart, the daughter of a banker. Harry Koch had five surviving siblings and another five half-siblings who all remained in the Netherlands. A tjasker is a type of small drainage windmill used in the Netherlands. There are thirteen tjaskers remaining in Friesland. Locations Allingawier ;Bij de Izeren Kou The paaltjasker was built in 1970 in Allingawier and is part of the ''Aldfaers Erf Route'', a route along museums in Allingawier, Exmorra and Piaam. The tjasker has four Common sails, which have a span of and can pump water in a circuit. The tjasker is owned by ''Stichting Aldfears Erf'' and can be visited when the museum is open. Hotel De Boer
NV Hotel Mijn de Boer (more popularly called by Hotel de Boer, now Inna Dharma Deli Hotel) is a Dutch colonial style hotel located on the Cremerweg (now Jalan Balai Kota), Medan, Dutch East Indies, current-day Indonesia. The hotel was built in 1898 by Workum native and Dutch businessman Aeint Herman de Boer. De Boer migrated to Dutch East Indies in late nineteenth century. First, he settled in Surabaya and became a part proprietor of a restaurant in Surabaya. In 1809, he migrated to Medan and began his new business. In early 1898, he built Hotel De Boer which just cointaned a restaurant, a bar, and seven rooms. In 1909, de Boer expanded his hotel by adding 40 rooms. In 1930, Hotel De Boer was expanded by adding 120 rooms and a huge hall.
