Words And Music (Canadian Game Show)
''Words and Music'' is a Canadian television game show that aired over the CTV network during the 1966–1967 season. The show was created by bandleader Sammy Kaye and hosted by American television personality Jim Perry, who later went on to host '' Card Sharks'' and ''Sale of the Century'' in the 1970s and 1980s. The show was produced from the studios of CFCF-TV in Montreal and Perry regularly commuted from his home in New York to host the show. Gameplay The object of the game was for contestants to guess a mystery subject which was the name of a person, place, or thing through a series of musical clues. The show's organist played a medley of three songs, all of which shared a common word in their title. For example, the medley of songs might be ''Blue Moon,'' ''Blue Skies,'' and ''Blue Moon of Kentucky'' so the common word is ''blue.'' Sammy Kaye
Sammy Kaye (born Samuel Zarnocay Jr.; March 13, 1910 – June 2, 1987) was an American bandleader and songwriter, whose tag line, "Swing and Sway with Sammy Kaye", became one of the most famous of the Big Band Era. The expression springs from his first hit single in 1937, " Swing and Sway" (U.S. #15). His signature tune was " Harbor Lights", a number-one hit from late 1950. Biography Kaye, born in Lakewood, Ohio, United States, graduated from Rocky River High School in Rocky River, Ohio. At Ohio University in Athens, Ohio he was a member of Theta Chi fraternity. Kaye could play the saxophone and the clarinet, but he never featured himself as a soloist on either one. A leader of one of the so-called "Sweet" bands of the Big Band Era, he made a large number of records for Vocalion Records, RCA Victor, Columbia Records, Bell Records, and the American Decca record label. Jim Perry (television Personality)
Jim Perry (November 9, 1933 – November 20, 2015) was an American-Canadian television game show host, singer, announcer, and performer in the 1970s and 1980s. Perry enjoyed success on both Canadian and American television. He was the host of the American game shows ''Card Sharks'' and '' $ale of the Century'', as well as the Canadian game shows ''Definition'' and '' Headline Hunters''. Perry was also the host of the Miss Canada pageant in the 1970s and 1980s. Early career Perry was born James Edward Dooley in Camden, New Jersey. His mother, Genevieve Perry, was a record-holding swimmer, as well as a known marathon dancer. His father, Edward Dooley, was a musician. While briefly attending Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton, California, Perry was an outstanding basketball player thanks in part to his height (at 6'4" or 193 cm); he graduated in 1952. ''Card Sharks'' is an American television game show. It was created by Chester Feldman for Mark Goodson-Bill Todman Productions. The game features two contestants who attempt to predict the outcome of survey questions to gain control of a row of oversized playing cards, then determine whether the next card drawn is higher or lower. The title ''Card Sharks'' is a play on the term "card sharp", a person skilled at card games. The concept has been made into a series four separate times since its debut in 1978, and also appeared as part of CBS's '' Gameshow Marathon''. The show originally ran on NBC from 1978 to 1981 with Jim Perry hosting. ''Sale of the Century'' (stylized as ''$ale of the Century'') is an American television game show that originally debuted on September 29, 1969, on NBC daytime. It was one of three NBC game shows to premiere on that date, the other two being the short-lived game shows ''Letters to Laugh-In'' and ''Name Droppers''. The series aired until July 13, 1973, and a weekly syndicated series began that fall and ran for one season. The rights to the show were purchased in 1980 by Australian TV mogul Reg Grundy, who produced a similar show called ''Great Temptation'' in the 1970s. Grundy subsequently launched an Australian version of ''Sale of the Century''. Grundy's modified format was then used in a revived American ''Sale of the Century'' that aired on NBC from January 3, 1983 to March 24, 1989. ''It's Your Move'' was a Canadian charade-style game show originally produced in the mid-1960s. Created by Art Baer and Ben Joelson (producers of '' The Love Boat''), the show's original host was Paul Hanover. On the program, teams bid against each other as to who could act out an answer to their teammate in less time. Doing so scored one point which the other team scored if the acting team failed. Three points won a prize, and $15 if the team scored at least one point on their own. The winners chose one of the three words they scored and revealed either a merchandise item, up to $250 in cash, or dinner for two. Two games won the match, and five games won a grand prize such as a trip.
