Woodside Park (Silver Spring, Maryland)
Woodside Park is a neighborhood located in Silver Spring, Maryland, in the United States. Early history Woodside Park began as the Alton Farm, country estate of Crosby Stuart Noyes, a prominent Washingtonian and owner of the ''Washington Evening Star'' newspaper. Upon his death in 1908, his will gave the land to his children with a provision that his widow could live on the estate until her death. She survived until 1914. The Noyes children eventually sold the property to the Woodside Development Corporation in 1922. The corporation divided the farm into lots of approximately one acre each, though most original lots were later subdivided into half acre or smaller parcels. Between the 1920s and the 1960s, racially restrictive covenants were used in Woodside Park to exclude African-Americans. The racial covenants prohibited homeowners from selling or leasing their property to "any one of a race whose death rate is at a higher percentage than the white race." In practice, such eu ... Woodside Amusement Park
Woodside Amusement Park was an amusement park that existed inside West Fairmount Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, that was constructed in 1897 by the Fairmount Park Transportation Company (FPT), and that continued operations until 1955. One of the coasters was transferred to the Million Dollar Pier as "The Skooter" in Atlantic City, New Jersey at the park's demise. Other famous rides "... included the famous Hummer roller coaster, the Whip, and the Wild Cat." The FPT's trolley line ran for around 10 miles around the park that also included parts of West Philadelphia and Strawberry Mansion. Also in the park was a third-mile wooden cycling track, which was used by Major Taylor to break many world records in 1898. The introduction of the trolley also introduced "non-bourgeois elements", and the park lost its "middle class tone." Woodside Park is a suburban residential area in the London Borough of Barnet, in the North Finchley postal district of N12. Description The area to the east of the tube station consists predominantly of large Victorian and Edwardian houses, many of which have been converted into flats. It also contains Woodside Park Synagogue and a Jewish school operating from the synagogue. The western and north-western part of the area, which can also be regarded as the part of Totteridge in N12 rather than N20, is sometimes called Woodside Park Garden Suburb and consists of semi-detached or detached 3 to 4 bedroom houses built in the 1950s. It includes the Woodside Park Club. The eastern boundary of the Garden Suburb is the Dollis Brook and the southern boundary is the Folly Brook. Woodside Park Tube Station
Woodside Park is a London Underground station in Woodside Park, north London. The station is on the High Barnet branch of the Northern line, between Totteridge & Whetstone and West Finchley stations, and in Travelcard Zone 4. Woodside Park is the last station in an alphabetical list of London Underground stations. History Woodside Park station was planned by the Edgware, Highgate and London Railway (EH&LR) and was originally opened as Torrington Park on 1 April 1872 by the Great Northern Railway (which had taken over the EH&LR). The station was on a branch of a line that ran from Finsbury Park to Edgware via Highgate. The station was renamed within a month of opening, and again in 1882. After the 1921 Railways Act created the ''Big Four'' railway companies the line was, from 1923, part of the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER).
