Wood Green Animal Shelters
Woodgreen Pets Charity was founded in 1924 by Miss Louisa Snow. She had been concerned at the large number of abandoned and injured animals on the streets of London following the First World War. This led to her opening a centre in a house in Lordship Lane, North London. In 1987 the charity opened its centre in Godmanchester, Cambridge. It has since become one of the largest animal rehoming centres in Europe, with modern facilities for the care of dogs, cats, small and outdoor animals. A veterinary surgery and kennels block were built at the charity's Godmanchester centre in 2012. This was largely funded by a gift from a dedicated supporter left in their Will. In 2020, the charity launched a Pet Collection service which covers North London, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire. Lordship Lane, Haringey
Lordship Lane connects Wood Green (N22) with Tottenham High Road (N17). It lies in the London Borough of Haringey and forms part of the A109 road. History Wood Green was originally a clearing in the dense forests of oak, ash and beech that covered most of what is now North London. There were a number of these clearings in the vicinity and each is likely to have been the site of a few simple habitations. Lordship Lane would have begun as a track running through the forest from the clearing at Wood Green to Ermine Street, the main Roman road from London to the north east. During the 1000 years before the Norman Conquest, the county of Middlesex was established and divided into administrative areas called Hundreds. Godmanchester ( ) is a town and civil parish in the Huntingdonshire district of Cambridgeshire, England. It is separated from Huntingdon, to the north, by the valley of the River Great Ouse. Being on the Roman road network, the town has a long history.
