Wood Colony, California
Wood Colony is an unincorporated area in Stanislaus County, California, United States, located to the west of Modesto. It has been designated as a "Community of Interest" by Stanislaus County's Local Area Formation Commission (LAFCO). History Wood Colony derives its name from one of the first settlers, Ebenezer "Eben" Wood, who purchased 1,760 acres from Timothy Paige in 1869. Eben Wood and his wife, Sarah A. (Wiley) Wood, moved to the property and lived in a small frame house there until 1894. Eben Wood died May 18, 1902, and was buried in Citizen's Cemetery (Modesto Cemetery) on Scenic Drive. Wood Creek near Sonora is also named for Eben Wood. Old German Baptist Brethren church members began settling in Wood Colony in the 1870s. Today, the Old German Baptist Brethren, Old German Baptist Brethren New Conference and Old Brethren church members make up about one-third of the population of Wood Colony. The Old German Baptist Brethren (OGBB) is a conservative Plain church which emerged from a division among the German Baptist Brethren in 1881 being part of the Old Order Movement. Like the church it emerged from, it has roots both in Anabaptism and in Radical Pietism. It practices adult believers baptism as the biblically valid form of baptism. It is also characterized by strict religious adherence with rejection of modern culture and modern assimilation. Old Brethren
The history of the Old Brethren Church dates back to Germany in 1708, when the Schwarzenau Brethren were formed in Berleburg under the leadership of Alexander Mack. Soon they moved to Pennsylvania to escape religious persecution in Europe. As the American frontier moved west, Brethren followed to Ohio, Indiana and beyond. The Old Brethren are a group of Schwarzenau Brethren who split from the Old German Baptist Brethren in Carroll County, Indiana (Deer Creek), in 1913, and in Stanislaus County, California, in 1915. They are a believer's church made up of those who voluntarily choose to follow Jesus as His disciples, and are baptized at this time, during their teen or adult years. Hart-Ransom Union School District
Hart-Ransom Union School District was, in the 60s and 70s, a K-8 school district in Stanislaus County, California, historically known as Ransom School. The '' Modesto Bee'' occasionally reprints a news item from 1901 reporting that a criminal was gunned down by a sheriff on Ransom School's doorstep. Hart School was formerly located on Hart Road. Members of the Hart family still attended the school at least as recently as the mid-70s.
