Wonthaggi Railway Station
Wonthaggi was a railway station located in the town of Wonthaggi, Victoria, Australia. Built to serve the town, as well as the State Coal Mine, the station was the official terminus station of the Wonthaggi line, but two short branch lines continued from the station leading to the Kirrak and Eastern Area mine extensions. The station operated until the line's closure in 1978, with the station building now preserved and used as a museum. Other pieces or railway infrastructure remaining at the station include a goods shed and crane. Wonthaggi is a seaside town located south east of Melbourne via the South Gippsland and Bass Highways, in the Bass Coast Shire of Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. Known originally for its coal mining, it is now the largest town in South Gippsland, a regional area with extensive tourism, beef and dairy industries. The name "Wonthaggi" is an Australian Aboriginal name meaning "home" from the Boonwurrung (south-central Kulin). It was used in the area some time before 1 August 1910 when the town was founded. History The Boonwurrung aboriginal people were custodians of this stretch of coast for thousands of years prior to white settlement. The Boakoolawal clan lived in the Kilcunda area south of the Bass River, and the Yowenjerre were west of the Tarwin River along what is now the Bunurong Marine and Coastal Park. State Coal Mine, Victoria
The State Coal Mine, also known as State Coal Mine Heritage Area, is a former 20th-century state-owned black coal mine located in Wonthaggi, Victoria, Australia. The mine was operational from 1910 until 1968 and is now a state park and tourist attraction. History The coal deposits at the site are estimated to be more than 150 million years old and the tunnels of the mine encompass nearly , forming an underground ring around the town of Wonthaggi. The site is located adjacent to the former railway line to Melbourne via Wonthaggi. The State Coal Mine and the town of Wonthaggi came into being in 1909 to supply coal for the Victorian Railways. Rising from its beginnings as a makeshift "Tent Town", Wonthaggi quickly grew to the thriving town we know today. Kirrak Railway Line
Kirrak was a railway branch line, it was built in 1939 to service the Kirrak Coal mine located near the town of Wonthaggi, Australia. The last day of operation of the mine was Fri 20 December 1968. Monash Railway Club chartered the local 102 hp [75 kW] Walker railmotor to travel to State mine and to Kirrak mine that day. The last wagons of coal were not removed from Kirrak until the end of the month. All references to the line were removed from railway records in 1976.
