Wongkamala
The Wanggamala people, also spelt Wangkamahdla, Wangkamadla, Wangkamanha, Wangkamana, Wonkamala, Wongkamala, Wonkamudla, and other variants, are an Aboriginal Australian people of the Northern Territory and Queensland. Country In Norman Tindale's estimate, Wanggamala tribal lands covered some of territory. They roamed north-west of Annandale, at Kalidawarry and around the lower Field and Hay rivers, along the Plenty river, and on the eastern margins of the Simpson Desert. River waters were ephemeral and they dug native wells (''mikari''). In July 2021, the Wanggamala people, spelt Wangkamahdla in the claim, won native title rights to over west and south-west of Boulia, stretching from around Bedourie, Queensland, across to the Northern Territory border, including Cravens Peak Reserve (named Pilungah Reserve in October 2021) and part of the Munga-Thirri National Park. Wanggamala Language
Wanggamala, also spelt Wanggamanha, Wangkamahdla, Wangkamadla, Wangkamanha, Wangkamana, Wonkamala, Wongkamala, Wonkamudla, and other variants, is an extinct Australian Aboriginal language of the Pama–Nyungan family, previously spoken in the Northern Territory around Hay River (east of Alice Springs) and to the south of the Andegerebinha-speaking area. As of 2003, there was one speaker remaining. According to Gavan Breen (2007), Lanima (AIATSIS code G52) and Yurlayurlanya (formerly spelt Ulaolinya) are groups whose dialect is Wangkamanha G1, or possibly two names for the same group. Other linguists have offered different interpretations of the dialects. Wangka-Yutjurru (AIATSIS G5) is a separate language (also Karnic, according to Luise Hercus, according to Gavan Breen, which has two dialects, Wangka-Yutjurru and Wangkamanha. Annandale Station (pastoral Lease)
Annandale Station most commonly known as Annandale is a pastoral lease that operates as a cattle station in central west Queensland. It is located on the tribal lands of the Wongkamala. The property is located west Birdsville and south of Boulia in the Channel Country of Queensland. History The station was the first established in the area when Patrick Drinan took up the run in July 1876. Other properties were settled soon afterwards including Kaliduwarry and Glengyle Stations. The station was named after his family's estate, ''Annandale'', in Gladstone. Drinan sold the property to the Collins brothers the following year. The Collins brothers then sold Annandale to Edward Wienholt in 1881; Wienholt was a well-known pastoralist and held properties such as ''Katandra'', ''Warenda'' and ''Saltern Creek''. Pilungah Reserve
Pilungah Reserve, formerly Cravens Peak Reserve, is a nature reserve in Central West Queensland, Australia, south-west of Boulia and south of Mount Isa. It lies at the northern end of the Simpson Desert and includes parts of the bioregions known as the Simpson-Strezlecki Dunefields and Channel Country. Its western boundary borders the Northern Territory. It is owned by Bush Heritage Australia (BHA). History Pilungah contains fish fossils from the Devonian period. The traditional owners of Pilungah are the Wangkamadla (also spelt Wanggamala, Wangkamahdla, Wongkamala) people. Pituri
Pituri, also known as mingkulpa, is a mixture of leaves and wood ash traditionally chewed as a stimulant (or, after extended use, a depressant) by Aboriginal Australians widely across the continent. Leaves are gathered from any of several species of native tobacco (''Nicotiana'') or from at least one distinct population of the species ''Duboisia hopwoodii''. Various species of ''Acacia'', ''Grevillea'' and ''Eucalyptus'' are burned to produce the ash. The term "pituri" may also refer to the plants from which the leaves are gathered or from which the ash is made. David Robert Horton (born 1945) is an Australian writer who has been described as a polymath, with qualifications and careers in science and the arts. He is known for his compilation of the work '' The Encyclopaedia of Aboriginal Australia: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, society and culture'' in 1994, and its accompanying map of Aboriginal groupings across Australia.
