There is a long history of women in dentistry. Timeline 16th century * Unknown, 16th century: In an early copper engraving by Lucas Van Leyden, a traveling dentist can be seen along with a woman acting as his assistant. 18th century 1755: A new law was established to further block women's professional development in the dental field in which they were prohibited to access dental studies. Lucas Van Leyden
Lucas van Leyden (1494 – 8 August 1533), also named either Lucas Hugensz or Lucas Jacobsz, was a Dutch painter and printmaker in engraving and woodcut. Lucas van Leyden was among the first Dutch exponents of genre painting and was a very accomplished engraver. Lucas was the son of the painter Huygh Jacobsz. He was born, died, and was mainly active in Leiden. Carel van Mander characterizes Lucas as a tireless artist, who as a child annoyed his mother by working long hours after nightfall, which she forbade not only for the cost of candlelight, but also because she felt that too much study was bad for his sensibilities. Faith Sai So Leong
Faith Sai So Leong (1880-1929), also called Sai So Yeong, was the first Chinese American woman to graduate from a school of dentistry and become a dentist in the United States. Life Born in China, and adopted as Sai So Yeong by Mrs. E J Nickerson, an English teacher, in San Francisco at age 13, Faith was encouraged to pursue dentistry by a cousin who was also a dentist. She was 24 years old when she became the first woman to graduate from the College of Physicians and Surgeons (now the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry) in 1904. Career She was awarded the Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1905 from the College of Physicians and Surgeons, San Francisco, May 18, 1905 at the Alhambra Theater, San Francisco. Emma Gaudreau Casgrain (2 June 1861, in Montmagny, Quebec – 1934) was the first woman to be licensed as a dentist in Canada. Biography Gaudreau, born in Montmagny, studied with the Ursulines. In 1879, she married Henri-Edmond Casgrain (1846-1914), dental surgeon, inventor, alderman and first Quebec motorist. She trained as a dentist under her husband, a dental surgeon who was 15 years her senior. Lilian Lindsay, CBE, Society of Antiquaries of London, FSA (née Murray) (24 July 1871 – 31 January 1960) was a dentist, dental historian, librarian and author who became the first qualified female dentist in Britain and the first female president of the British Dental Association. Biography She was born Lilian Murray in Holloway, London in 1871, the daughter of a musician, and the third of eleven children. She was educated at the Camden School for Girls, and won a scholarship to the North London Collegiate School. The founder and headmistress of the school, Frances Buss, informed Lilian that she would be suited to a career teaching deaf children; Lilian disagreed, and informed Miss Buss that she would become a dentist. Due to the argument, Lilian lost the scholarship and left the school in 1889. The Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (RCDSO) is the regulatory college for dentists in the province of Ontario, Canada. The college was incorporated on March 4, 1868, when royal assent was granted to ''An Act Respecting Dentistry'' in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. Caroline Louise Josephine Wells (August 1856 – 17 March 1939) was the first professionally qualified female dentist in Ontario, Canada. She was also the first person to provide dental services in mental hospitals in Ontario, and towards the end of her career worked exclusively in these institutions.
