History Of Women In Korea
The figure of the Korean woman has undergone changes with the succession of times, following the changes in the family structure. Family structure from the Goryeo Dynasty to the Joseon Dynasty The transformation of the family from the Goryeo Dynasty (; 918 - 1392) to the Joseon Dynasty (; 1392 - 1910) caused the gradual decline of Korean women’s status and visibility in the public sphere. The most impressive change was a shift from an emphasis on a Matriarchy, matrilineal to a Patriarchy, patrilineal structure of kinship and identity. During Goryeo Dynasty newly married couples used to live with the bride's family, which offered numerous advantages for the women, not least of which was economic. A woman could safeguard her share of the inheritance she shared equally with her male siblings. Women In North Korea
The status of women in North Korea is not fully understood outside the country, due to the political isolation of North Korea, the unwillingness of the North Korean authorities to allow foreign investigators access in the country, and the existence of conflicting reports. The official position of the North Korean government is that women have equal rights with men. North Korea has enacted laws such as the Law on Sex Equality, the Labor Law (North Korea), Labor Law, and the Law on Nationalization of Essential Industries. Although these social systems have not entirely been successful, they have been integrated into daily life to help women. The reforms implemented provided women's rights at work, rights of inheriting and sharing of properties, and rights of free marriage and divorce. North Korea also outlawed polygamy. Women in South Korea have experienced significant improvements for social changes in recent years, compared to previous times, when Confucianism was deeply imbued in the culture. In today's society, the economy of South Korea has tremendously improved due to urbanisation, industrialisation, military authoritarianism, democratic reform, and social liberalisation since the late 1960s.
