Women's football in Norway is one of the traditional powers of women's football. The Norwegian Women's Football Championship is a tournament reserved for women's football teams divided into six levels, consisting of a national championship in the top three under the management of the Norwegian Football Association (NFF), while the lower ones are managed by various regional associations. Toppserien is the biggest football division in Norway by importance and is followed by the 1st division hierarchy. The Norwegian football system consists of a series of alloys linked to each other by hierarchy through promotions and relegations. In each division the teams face an Italian round with round-trip matches. Football is the most popular sport in Norway in terms of active membership (by television viewership football comes third, behind winter sports biathlon and cross-country skiing). The 1987 European Competition for Women's Football took place in Norway. It was won by Norway women's national football team, the hosts in a final against defending champions Sweden women's national football team, Sweden. 1995 FIFA Women's World Cup
The 1995 FIFA Women's World Cup, the second edition of the FIFA Women's World Cup, was held in Sweden and won by Norway women's national football team, Norway, who became the first European nation to win the Women's World Cup. The tournament featured 12 women's national teams from six continental confederations. The 12 teams were drawn into three groups of four and each group played a round-robin tournament. Norwegian Second Division (women)
The Norwegian Second Division ( no, 2. divisjon) is the third highest level of women's football in Norway. In the 2022 season, it consisted of 71 teams divided into eight groups. Two teams are promoted to the Norwegian First Division (women), Norwegian First Division each season. The worst ranked teams are relegated to the Norwegian Third Division. FK Fyllingsdalen, Fyllingsdalen and SF Grei, Grei are the current champions. Starting from the 2023 season, the league will consist of 28 teams divided into two groups. The Norwegian Football Federation ( nb, Norges Fotballforbund, nn, Noregs Fotballforbund; NFF) is the governing body of football in Norway. It was formed in 1902 and organises the men's and women's national teams, as well as the league systems for men and women (whose top levels are respectively the Eliteserien and Toppserien). The current president of NFF is Lise Klaveness. By 1 January 2004, there were 1,814 clubs organized in Norway and 373,532 registered players. It is the largest sports federation in Norway. The NFF joined FIFA in 1908, and UEFA in 1954. The NFF was part of an unsuccessful joint bid with the SvFF, the DBU and the SPL to host the UEFA Euro 2008 championship.
