Women's Rugby Bundesliga
The Women's Rugby Bundesliga is the top national competition for women's rugby union football clubs in Germany. The competition started in 1988 and the most successful teams are the SC Neuenheim, FC St. Pauli and Heidelberger RK. In October 2009, it was decided to continue with the development plan for the women's Bundesliga. Women's rugby union is a full contact team sport based on running with the ball in hand. The same laws are used in men's rugby union with the same sized pitch and same equipment. Rugby was originally a men's sport, and women's rugby has become popular only more recently. Rugby-Bundesliga
The Rugby-Bundesliga is the highest level of the league system for rugby union in Germany, organised by the German Rugby Federation. The league is predominantly amateur, with only one club in the league being officially a professional outfit, the Heidelberger RK. From 2012 to 2015 the Bundesliga was expanded from ten to 24 and the league divided into four regional divisions of six teams each. Below the Bundesliga the 2. Bundesliga was organised in a similar fashion. From 2015 onwards the league returned to sixteen clubs. History The German rugby championship was first played in 1909 and, with the exception of 2002, has always been determined by a final. The Karlsruher SV Rugby is a German rugby union club from Karlsruhe, currently playing in the 2. Rugby-Bundesliga. It is part of a larger club, the Karlsruher SV, which also offers other sports like tennis and association football. History The ''KSV'' was formed in 1991 through a merger of to local clubs, the ''FC Nordstern Rintheim'', formed 1909, and the ''FC Waldstadt'', formed in 1962. The clubs rugby department achieved promotion to the 2. Rugby-Bundesliga from the Rugby-Regionalliga in 2003, finishing fifth in the new league in its first season there. The second season ended with relegation back to the Regionalliga and it took the club until 2009, to return to the second division. The TSV Handschuhsheim is a German rugby union club from Heidelberg, currently playing in the Rugby-Bundesliga. Apart from rugby, the club also offers other sports like association football, handball and tennis. The DRC Hannover is a German rugby union club from Hannover, currently playing in the Rugby-Regionalliga. The club should not be confused with the ''DRC 1884 Hannover'', a rowing club and a separate entity. History The club was formed in 1905 in the Hannover suburb of Ricklingen. The club did not really make an impact on the German rugby scene for the first 80 years of its history, facing strong opposition within Hannover, one of the two centres of German rugby.
