Women's Prison (1955 Film)
''Women's Prison'' is a 1955 American film noir crime film directed by Lewis Seiler and starring Ida Lupino, Jan Sterling, Cleo Moore, Audrey Totter, Phyllis Thaxter and Howard Duff. The film is noted today for the appearance of Moore, and for Lupino's performance as the aggressively cruel warden. In the 1980s the film became rather popular, Sony Pictures subsequently released it in the boxed set ''Bad Girls of Film Noir: Volume II'' along with ''Night Editor'', '' One Girl's Confession'' and '' Over-Exposed''. Plot A ruthless superintendent of a prison, Amelia van Zandt, makes life hell for the female inmates. Her rules are rigid and she makes no exceptions. The newcomer Helene Jensen is not a hardened criminal by any means, but a woman convicted of vehicular homicide after she accidentally killed a child. Lewis Seiler (September 30, 1890 – January 8, 1964) was an American film director. He directed more than 80 films between 1923 and 1958. Edna Holland
Edna Milton Holland (September 20, 1895 – May 4, 1982) was an American actress. Her stage, screen and television lasted from the beginning of the 20th century to 1965. Holland was the daughter of comedian Edmund Milton Holland and actress Emity Seward. Her uncle, Joseph Holland, was an actor. As a child, she played in stage productions by David Belasco. Beginning in 1915, Holland appeared in silent films, including '' Always in the Way'', '' The Feud Girl'', '' Mary Moreland'' and '' The Masked Rider''. She was often seen as "The Other Woman" to actresses such as Mary Miles Minter. After an absence of nearly 20 years and numerous stage roles, Holland resumed making films in the late 1930s. Middle-aged, she often portrayed "professional women such as teachers, nurses or secretaries" in supporting roles or minor parts. Juanita Moore (October 19, 1914 – January 1, 2014) was an American film, television, and stage actress. Adelle August (12 February 1934 – 24 April 2005), was an American movie actress. She was born in Kennewick, Washington as Adele M. Slaybough. In 1952 she graduated from Highline High School, and was crowned Miss Washington USA the same year. Two years later she was signed to Columbia Pictures. Her brief career in the film industry lasted 1955–56 when she appeared in three films and a pair of television episodes, including the TV western ''Cheyenne'' in which she appeared as Jeremy Barnes in the 1955 episode "Julesburg." In addition to her acting career, she was a showgirl at the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. She was married to Leonard Rogers in 1959, becoming Adelle M. Rogers. Ross Elliott (born Elliott Blum, June 18, 1917 – August 12, 1999) was an American television and film character actor. He began his acting career in the Mercury Theatre, where he performed in '' The War of the Worlds'', Orson Welles' famed radio program. Early years Elliott was born in the Bronx, New York.
