Wombwell Main Football Club is a football club based in Wombwell, Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. They are currently members of the and play at Hough Lane. History Little is known of the formation of the club – they first came to prominence when entering the FA Cup in 1906. They have entered the FA Cup on a total of 10 occasions. They entered the Sheffield & Hallamshire County Senior League (S&HCSL) in 1996, and by 1998 they had won two successive promotions to reach the S&HCSL's Premier Division. In their first Premier Division campaign they claimed the league championship – an achievement they would repeat on a further three occasions. Wombwell
Wombwell () is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England. The town in the 2011 census was split between a ward called Wombwell, as well as small parts that fell under two other wards called Darfield (specifically the area south of Pitt Street, including Broomhill) and Stairfoot (specifically the area south of Aldham Crescent). Added together, these list the town's population as roughly 15,316. Historically within the West Riding of Yorkshire, its name's origin may mean "Womba's Well", or "well in a hollow". Wombwell railway station (formerly Wombwell West) serves the Penistone and Hallam lines. Until 1959 it had another station ( Wombwell Central) on the Barnsley-Doncaster line that was closed when that line lost its passenger service. The Sheffield & Hallamshire County Senior Football League is an English football league that was founded in 1983 by the merger of the former Sheffield Association League and Hatchard League. 1908–09 FA Cup
The 1908–09 FA Cup was the 38th staging of the world's oldest association football competition, the Football Association Challenge Cup (more usually known as the FA Cup). Manchester United won the competition for the first time, beating Bristol City 1–0 in the final at Crystal Palace, through a goal from Sandy Turnbull. Matches were scheduled to be played at the stadium of the team named first on the date specified for each round, which was always a Saturday. If scores were level after 90 minutes had been played, a replay would take place at the stadium of the second-named team later the same week. If the replayed match was drawn further replays would be held at neutral venues until a winner was determined. Colin Collindridge
Colin Collindridge (15 November 1920 – 14 April 2019) was an English footballer who played either as an outside left or a centre forward. Born in Barnsley, the early part of his playing career coincided with World War II but he subsequently represented Sheffield United, Nottingham Forest and Coventry City in the Football League. Career Collindridge was working as a miner and playing as an amateur for local side Wombwell Main when he was offered a trial with Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1937. Having failed to secure a contract with Wolves, Collindridge signed an amateur contract with Rotherham United the following summer, remaining with the Millers for a season before turning out for Barugh Green, his home-town side in 1938. It was here that Collindridge was spotted by Sheffield United, who signed him on amateur terms in December 1938, and professionally a month later in January 1939. The English Football League (EFL) is a league of professional football clubs from England and Wales. Founded in 1888 as the Football League, the league is the oldest such competition in the world. The Hatchard Football League was an English association football league based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. History Founded in 1892, it was originally called the Sheffield & District Alliance, only changing name to the Hatchard Cup League halfway through the 1893–94 season when a local politician called Frank Hatchard donated a trophy to the Sheffield & Hallamshire FA. For many years there were numerous divisions, with the top sides from each section proceeding to end of season play-offs that would determine the overall winner. The league was suspended for the duration of the First World War, then disbanded altogether in 1923, but was re-introduced after the Second World War.
