__NOTOC__ Wolfgang Lange (1 June 1898 – 10 February 1988) was a German general during World War II. He was a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. Lange surrendered to the American troops on 15 April 1945 in the Ruhr Pocket. Operation Queen
Operation Queen was an American operation during World War II on the Western Front at the German Siegfried Line. The operation was aimed against the Rur River, as a staging point for a subsequent thrust over the river to the Rhine into Germany. It was conducted by the First and Ninth U.S. Armies. The offensive commenced on 16 November 1944 with one of the heaviest Allied tactical bombings of the war. However, the Allied advance was unexpectedly slow, against heavy German resistance, especially in the Hürtgen Forest through which the main thrust of the offensive was carried out. By mid-December, the Allies finally reached the Rur and tried to capture its important dams, when the Germans launched their own offensive, dubbed ''Wacht am Rhein''. The ensuing Battle of the Bulge led to the immediate cessation of Allied offensive efforts into Germany until February 1945. Lindemann surrendered to the Red Army in the course of the Soviet July 1944 Lvov–Sandomierz Offensive. Convicted as a war criminal in the Soviet union, he was held until 1955. The 339th Infantry Division was a German military unit which fought during World War II. History The 339th Infantry Division was created in December 1940 as an infantry division of the 14th Aufstellungswelle in military district IX in Thuringia. In May 1941 it was moved to the border with the Soviet Union. After Operation Barbarossa, the 339th ID was deployed in August 1941 in the rear area of Army Group Center near Vitebsk and Bobruisk in Belarus. From January 1942 to January 1943, the 339th ID fought in the Battles of Rzhev with the 2nd Panzer Army around Bryansk. In Summer 1943, the Division fought in the Battle of Kursk, still as part of the 2nd Panzer Army, under the LV Army Corps.
