Cynthia Griffin Wolff (née Griffin; born August 20, 1936) is an American literary historian and editor known for her biographies of Edith Wharton and Emily Dickinson. She has served as Class of 1922 Professor of Humanities at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Biography Cynthia Griffin Wolff was born on August 20, 1936, in St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of Sears executive James T. Griffin. She studied at Hathaway Brown School and Radcliffe College (where she obtained a BA in 1958). Wolff later moved to Harvard University, where, in addition to studying at Harvard Medical School, she obtained a PhD in English; her dissertation was titled ''The Puritan Sources of Richardson's Psychological Realism''. Wolff worked as an assistant professor at Manhattanville College and later at University of Massachusetts, Amherst, before being promoted by the latter to professor in 1976. Wolff's skills, as an executive and a photographer, were important contributions to the success of the Blue Note record label. Career Jakob Franz "Franny" Wolff was born in Berlin, Germany, where he became a jazz enthusiast, despite the government ban placed on this type of music after 1933. After a career as a commercial photographer in Germany, Wolff emigrated to the United States. A Jew, he left Berlin for New York in the late 1930s. In 1939 in New York his childhood friend Alfred Lion had co-founded Blue Note Records (with sleeping partner Max Margulis, who soon dropped out of any involvement in the company), and Wolff joined Lion in running the company. Ernst Victor Wolff (August 6, 1889 – August 21, 1960) was a German-born concert pianist and harpsichordist, who maintained a career not only as a soloist but also as a respected accompanist. Singers with whom he performed included Dorothy Maynor and Alexander Kipnis; he accompanied the latter in the Hugo Wolf Society recording project of the 1930s. Enrique Ernesto "Quique" Wolff (born 21 February 1949) is an Argentine journalist and former football defender. He represented Argentina at the 1974 World Cup. Playing career Wolff, born in Victoria, Buenos Aires, began his career with Racing Club in 1967. He played for the club until he was transferred to River Plate in 1972.
