''Without Deception'' is a studio album by English jazz bassist Dave Holland, drummer Johnathan Blake, and pianist Kenny Barron. The album was released on by Dare2, Holland's own label. The album was recorded in Mount Vernon, New York, and consists of 10 compositions, including the Thelonious Monk's rarity "Worry Later". Background The collaboration between Kenny Barron and Dave Holland goes back some 35 years to the mid-1980s. In that time, Barron's trio created the album '' Scratch''. Five years after their last collaboration (''The Art of Conversation'', Impulse!, 2014), Barron and Holland met again, this time for a trio session with drummer Johnathan Blake. He had previously worked with Barron on his trio album ''Book of Intuition'' (2016) and on the quintet album ''Concentric Circles'' (2018), but had no playing experience with Holland. Thelonious Sphere Monk (, October 10, 1917 – February 17, 1982) was an American jazz pianist and composer. He had a unique improvisational style and made numerous contributions to the standard jazz repertoire, including " 'Round Midnight", "Blue Monk", " Straight, No Chaser", "Ruby, My Dear", "In Walked Bud", and "Well, You Needn't". Monk is the second-most-recorded jazz composer after Duke Ellington. Monk's compositions and improvisations feature dissonances and angular melodic twists and are consistent with his unorthodox approach to the piano, which combined a highly percussive attack with abrupt, dramatic use of switched key releases, silences, and hesitations. Sumi Tonooka (born October 3, 1956) is an American jazz pianist and composer. Life She had an African-American father and a Japanese-American mother. She earned her B.A, in music from the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts. Throughout her career, Tonooka has worked as a jazz pianist with musicians such as Kenny Burrell, Little Jimmy Scott, Sonny Fortune, Red Rodney, Benny Golson, Erica Lindsay, Odean Pope, Philly Joe Jones, Bobby Zankel and David Fathead Newman. In 1985, Tonooka was commissioned by the Japanese American Cultural Association to write a piece based on the experiences of her mother, who was interned at Manzanar. Mulgrew Miller
Mulgrew Miller (August 13, 1955 – May 29, 2013) was an American jazz pianist, composer, and educator. As a child he played in churches and was influenced on piano by Ramsey Lewis and then Oscar Peterson. Aspects of their styles remained in his playing, but he added the greater harmonic freedom of McCoy Tyner and others in developing as a hard bop player and then in creating his own style, which influenced others from the 1980s on. After leaving university he was pianist with the Duke Ellington Orchestra for three years, then accompanied vocalist Betty Carter. Kenny Wheeler
Kenneth Vincent John Wheeler, OC (14 January 1930 – 18 September 2014) was a Canadian composer and trumpet and flugelhorn player, based in the U.K. from the 1950s onwards. Most of his performances were rooted in jazz, but he was also active in free improvisation and occasionally contributed to rock music recordings. Wheeler wrote over one hundred compositions and was a skilled arranger for small groups and large ensembles. Wheeler was the patron of the Royal Academy Junior Jazz course.
