Withering Of The Fig Tree
The cursing of the fig tree is an incident in the gospels, presented in gospel of Mark, Mark and gospel of Matthew, Matthew as a miracle in connection with the entry into Jerusalem, and in Gospel of Luke, Luke as a parable. (The gospel of John omits it entirely and shifts the incident with which it is connected, the Cleansing of the Temple, cleansing of the temple, from the end of Jesus' career to the beginning.) The image is taken from the Old Testament symbol of the fig tree representing Israel, and the cursing of the fig tree in Mark and Matthew and the parallel story in Luke are thus symbolically directed against the Jews, who have not accepted Jesus as Messiah. Gospels
Gospel originally meant the Christian message ("the gospel"), but in the 2nd century it came to be used also for the books in which the message was set out. In this sense a gospel can be defined as a loose-knit, episodic narrative of the words and deeds of Jesus, culminating in Trial of Jesus, his trial and Crucifixion of Jesus, death and concluding with various reports of Post-resurrection appearances of Jesus, his post-resurrection appearances.
