Witchaven
''Witchaven'' (usually pronounced ) is a dark fantasy first-person shooter video game developed by Capstone Software and published by Intracorp Entertainment in 1995. Its sword-and-sorcery themed story tasks the knight Grondoval with a quest to seek out and destroy a lair of witches in their titular fortress, fighting hordes of hostile monsters along the way. ''Witchaven'' features action role-playing elements such as leveling, as well as an emphasis on melee combat. Its code was based upon an early version of the nascent Build engine. The game received overall mixed reviews, such as praise for its atmosphere and gory combat, but criticism for some aspects of gameplay. It was followed by a sequel titled '' Witchaven II: Blood Vengeance'' in 1996. Capstone Software
Capstone Software was a subsidiary of IntraCorp, a Miami-based computer and video game company. Founded in 1984, Capstone created first-person games such as ''Corridor 7: Alien Invasion'', ''William Shatner's TekWar'' and ''Witchaven'', and is also known for releasing games based on movie/TV licenses. Capstone's first-person games used the Wolfenstein 3D engine, ''Wolfenstein 3D'' engine, and later, the Build engine. IntraCorp went bankrupt in 1996 and shut down all its operations, including Capstone Software. Capstone's last game, ''Corridor 8, Corridor 8: Galactic Wars'', never left the prototype stage and was never released. Capstone became VRTech, providing first-person buildouts of new construction condominiums using the Build engine. It eventually closed down. Build Engine is a first-person shooter engine created by Ken Silverman, author of ''Ken's Labyrinth'', for 3D Realms. Like the ''Doom'' engine, the Build Engine represents its world on a two-dimensional grid using closed 2D shapes called sectors, and uses simple flat objects called sprites to populate the world geometry with objects. The Build Engine is generally considered to be a 2.5D engine since the basic world geometry is two-dimensional with an added height component, allowing each sector to have a different ceiling height and floor height. Playing the game shows that some floors can be lower and some can be higher; the same is true with ceilings (in relation to each other). Floors and ceilings can hinge along one of the sector's walls, resulting in a slope. IntraCorp
IntraCorp was a Miami, Florida-based game publisher, founded in 1984. The company went bankrupt in 1996 and shut down along with their main subsidiary, Capstone Software. IntraCorp developed and published games across a variety of genres. Their last game, ''Fate'', was never released; in 1996 there was only a demo version with four playable levels. IntraCorp was also due to publish a near-complete English translation of Princess Maker 2 developed by SoftEgg, which was later leaked online. Ken Kelly (artist)
Ken W. Kelly (May 19, 1946 – June 2, 2022) was an American fantasy artist. Over his 50-year career, he focused in particular on paintings in the sword and sorcery and heroic fantasy subgenres. Biography Kelly was the nephew of Frank Frazetta's wife Eleanor "Ellie" Frazetta ( Kelly; 1935–2009). Early in his career he was able to study the paintings of Frank Frazetta in the latter's studio. In the early 1970s he did a couple of cover paintings for ''Castle of Frankenstein'' magazine. Throughout the 1970s he was one of the foremost cover artists on Warren Publishing's ''Creepy'' and ''Eerie'' magazines. A halberd (also called halbard, halbert or Swiss voulge) is a two-handed pole weapon that came to prominent use during the 13th, 14th, 15th, and 16th centuries.
