Witch Elm
Witch Elm (1904–1923) was a Thoroughbred racehorse owned by the William Hall Walker and trained by Jack Robinson. She was a daughter of Orme, who won the Eclipse Stakes twice and her dam was Cannie Lass, who was a daughter of Ayrshire. Racing career She won five races out of the nine she contested as a two-year-old, including the Cheveley Park Stakes and the West of Scotland Foal Stakes at Ayr. Amongst her other races were a fifth place in the National Breeders' Produce Stakes at Sandown and a third place in the Lancashire Breeders' Produce Stakes at Liverpool. As a three-year-old she easily won the 1000 Guineas from Fragility after starting the 4/1 favourite, but could not repeat this classic winning form over longer distances. Breeding career Witch Elm did not produce any top racehorses, but some of her descendants became classic winners in Brazil. Orme (horse)
Orme (1889 – 17 September 1915) was a British Thoroughbred Horse racing, racehorse. He was Horse trainer, trained at Kingsclere by John Porter (horseman), John Porter for the Hugh Grosvenor, 1st Duke of Westminster, 1st Duke of Westminster. As a two-year-old he won the Middle Park Stakes, Middle Park and Dewhurst Stakes. As a three-year-old he was not well enough to take part in the 2,000 Guineas Stakes, 2000 Guineas and Epsom Derby, but came back to win the Eclipse Stakes. Orme stayed in training as a four-year-old and won another Eclipse Stakes, becoming the first horse to win the race twice, a feat that has only been repeated four times since. After he had retired from racing, he became a successful sire and was Leading sire in Great Britain & Ireland, Champion sire of Great Britain in 1899. Lily Agnes
Lily Agnes (1871–1899) is an English Thoroughbred racehorse. On the track she won 21 races including the Northumberland Plate, Doncaster Cup and Ebor Handicap. She is best known for being the dam of unbeaten Triple Crown winner Ormonde, but she also produced a number of other top foals. When she was in training she was described as "a light-fleshed, ragged hipped, lop-eared filly". Race career Lily Agnes was the daughter of 2000 Guineas and Epsom Derby winner Macaroni, out of Polly Agnes who had been given to James Snarry by Sir Tatton Sykes. As a two-year-old Lily Agnes won all of her six starts. As a three-year-old she won seven of her ten starts, her victories included the Northumberland Plate and Doncaster Cup. Inbreeding
Inbreeding is the production of offspring from the mating or breeding of individuals or organisms that are closely related genetically. By analogy, the term is used in human reproduction, but more commonly refers to the genetic disorders and other consequences that may arise from expression of deleterious or recessive traits resulting from incestuous sexual relationships and consanguinity. Animals avoid incest only rarely. Inbreeding results in homozygosity, which can increase the chances of offspring being affected by recessive traits. Chestnut (coat)
Chestnut is a hair coat color of horses consisting of a reddish-to-brown coat with a mane and tail the same or lighter in color than the coat. Chestnut is characterized by the absolute absence of true black hairs. It is one of the most common horse coat colors, seen in almost every breed of horse. Chestnut is a very common coat color but the wide range of shades can cause confusion. The lightest chestnuts may be mistaken for palominos, while the darkest shades can be so dark they appear black. Chestnuts have dark brown eyes and black skin, and typically are some shade of red or reddish brown. Lord Clifden
Lord Clifden (1860 – 7 February 1875) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse. He was undefeated as a two-year-old, including wins in the Woodcote Stakes and Champagne Stakes (Great Britain), Champagne Stakes. As a three-year-old he was just beaten by a Horse length, short-head in the Epsom Derby, Derby, before winning the St. Leger Stakes, St. Leger later in the season, despite being 100 yards behind the rest of the field at one point in the race. After an unsuccessful four-year-old campaign he was retired to stud and became Leading sire in Great Britain and Ireland, champion sire of Great Britain and Ireland in 1876. He sired the St. Leger winners Hawthornden and Wenlock (horse), Wenlock, the dual-British Classic Races, Classic winners Petrarch (horse), Petrarch and Jannette, as well as the champion sire Hampton (horse), Hampton. Vedette (1854–1881) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 2000 Guineas Stakes and two Doncaster Cups. He also sired Epsom Derby winner and Champion sire, Galopin. He was owned by Thomas Dundas, 2nd Earl of Zetland and trained by George Abdale. Background Vedette was bred by Mr. Chilton and Anthony Harrison and was a brown (almost black) colt foaled in 1854. He was sired by Epsom Derby and St. Leger Stakes winner Voltigeur. His dam was Mrs. Ridgway, a daughter of Birdcatcher. Macaroni (horse)
Macaroni (1860–1887) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a career that lasted from October 1862 to September 1863 he ran eight times and won seven races. In 1863 he won all seven of his races including the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, The Derby and the Doncaster Cup. Background Macaroni was bred by Richard Grosvenor, 2nd Marquess of Westminster at his Eaton stud in Cheshire. In 1861 Macaroni was one of several yearlings at the stud to be affected by an outbreak of an equine respiratory disease known as Strangles, which adversely affected his physical development and persuaded the Marquis to sell him. Macaroni was part of a lot of six yearlings bought for £700 by the Liverpool banker Richard Naylor, who had recently started his own stud at Hooton Park on the Wirral Peninsula.
