Lookout! Records
Lookout Records (stylized as Lookout! Records) was an independent record label, initially based in Laytonville, California and later in Berkeley, focusing on punk rock. Established in 1987, the label is best known for having released Operation Ivy’s only album, ''Energy'', and Green Day's first two albums, ''39/Smooth'' and ''Kerplunk''. Following the departure of co-founder Larry Livermore in 1997, the label departed from its "East Bay sound" and proved unable to match early success. In 2005 the label ran into financial difficulties after several high-profile artists rescinded the rights to their Lookout Records material. After a period of rapid contraction the label slowly expired, terminating operations and removing its music from online distribution channels early in 2012. Chris Freeman (musician)
Chris Freeman (born Christopher Mark Freeman, August 8, 1961 in Seattle, Washington) is an American bassist, best known as a member of the band Pansy Division. Early life Freeman was born in Seattle and attended Weatherwax High School in Aberdeen, Washington. At school he got beat up routinely and tried to hide his homosexuality. At age 19 he was going to marry a girl that he played in a band with, before breaking it off and admitting he was gay. Pansy Division Freeman eventually left Washington and moved to San Francisco. In 1991 he met Jon Ginoli through an ad Ginoli placed in the San Francisco Weekly looking for "gay musicians into the Ramones, Buzzcocks and early Beatles". With Freeman playing bass, and Ginoli guitar, Pansy Division went through a series of drummers before settling on Luis Illades, who has been in the band since 1996. Jon Ginoli
Jon Latimer Ginoli (born in Peoria, Illinois) is an American guitarist. He is best known as a member of the band Pansy Division, which was founded by Ginoli and Chris Freeman in 1991. Pansy Division is known as one of the founding examples of the queercore genre of punk rock. He is openly gay. Ginoli, with Pansy Division, was featured in the 1997 documentary film ''Queercore: A Punk-U-Mentary'' by Scott Treleaven; as an actor, in the 2002 comedy short ''Going West'' by Michael Mew; and in the 2008 film ''Pansy Division: Life in a Gay Rock Band'' by Michael Carmona. Prior to Pansy Division, Ginoli was a singer, songwriter and guitarist for an indie band called The Outnumbered, which he formed while an undergraduate at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. ''Quite Contrary'' is the seventh studio album, ninth album overall, by American queercore band Pansy Division, it was released on September 9, 2016 by Alternative Tentacles. The cover features cover models Marcus Ewert and Moon Trent, who were the cover models for Pansy Division's 1996 album Wish I'd Taken Pictures. The band has playfully called ''Quite Contrary'' their “grandpa record” -- intended to describe growing older for a generation of gay men whose role models were decimated by AIDS. Marcus Ewert, previously known as Mark Ewert, is an American writer, actor and director, living in San Francisco. Ewert began making and appearing in films in the 1990s. He has appeared in the Gus Van Sant short film ''Four Naked Boys and a Gun'', in Sadie Benning's ''Flat Is Beautiful'', and the movie '' Frisk'' by Todd Verow. In 2008, the feature film ''The Lollipop Generation'' by G.B. Jones was released starring Mark Ewert in a lead role, alongside Jena von Brucker, Vaginal Davis, Calvin Johnson, Joel Gibb and Scott Treleaven. Queercore
Queercore (or homocore) is a cultural/social movement that began in the mid-1980s as an offshoot of the punk subculture and a music genre that comes from punk rock. It is distinguished by its discontent with society in general, and specifically society's disapproval of the LGBT community. Queercore expresses itself in a DIY style through magazines, music, writing and film. As a music genre, it may be distinguished by lyrics exploring themes of prejudice and dealing with issues such as sexual identity, gender identity and the rights of the individual; more generally, queercore bands offer a critique of society endemic to their position within it, sometimes in a light-hearted way, sometimes seriously.
