Wise Gap, (also known as Wise's Gap), is an unincorporated community in Monroe County, Mississippi, United States. Wise Gap is located east of Amory. It is located near the intersection of U.S. Route 278 and Mississippi Highway 8. History The community is named for the Wise family, who were early settlers of the area. It was one of the first settled communities in North Mississippi and was once home to a church, camp ground, multiple stores, and blacksmith shop. Wise Gap is located along the BNSF Railway. Amory, Mississippi
Amory is a city in Monroe County, Mississippi. The population was 7,316 at the 2010 census. Located in the northeastern part of the state near the Alabama border, it was founded in 1887 as a railroad town by the Kansas City, Memphis and Birmingham Railroad. As a result, Cotton Gin Port, along the Tombigbee River to the east, was abandoned as businesses and people moved for railroad access. History Amory was founded as a planned railroad town. The Kansas City, Memphis & Birmingham Railroad was expanding in the South and needed a midpoint between Memphis, Tennessee, and Birmingham, Alabama, to service their locomotives. They laid out the new town of Amory, Mississippi, near the Alabama border, in 1887. Believing railroad access to be critical, people from nearby Cotton Gin Port, about 1.5 miles away and located along the Tombigbee River, abandoned their town and moved to Amory. Tilghman Tucker
Tilghman Mayfield Tucker (February 5, 1802 – April 3, 1859) was Governor of Mississippi from 1842 to 1844. He was a Democrat. Biography Tucker was born in North Carolina near Lime Stone Springs, and lived in Alabama for a time before moving to Mississippi. He left his career of blacksmithing and studied law under Judge Daniel W. Wright in Hamilton, Mississippi. office in Columbus, Mississippi. Tucker was elected in 1831 to the Mississippi House of Representatives as a Democrat and was the first representative from Lowndes County, and served until 1835. From 1838 to 1841 he served in the state senate. In 1837 he had 3 male slaves and 4 female slaves according to the state census. The camp meeting is a form of Protestant Christian religious service originating in England and Scotland as an evangelical event in association with the communion season. North Mississippi
