Wintringham Specialist Aged Care
Wintringham, based in Victoria, Australia, is a secular, not-for-profit welfare company providing advocacy, support and aged care services to elderly homeless men and women, and to financially disadvantaged elderly people who are at risk of homelessness. History Wintringham was established in 1989 by Bryan Lipmann. He had been working as a jackaroo in the bush and, on returning to Melbourne, undertook a Social Work degree. He got a job working at Gordon House, one of Melbourne’s night shelters, where up to 300 homeless men and women lived, some of them for years, under scarifying conditions. It became Wintringham’s mantra that clients are “aged and homeless” and not “homeless and aged” and therefore should be part of Australia’s mainstream federal aged care funding program and not the homeless services system. In 2013, Elaine Farrelly, a Melbourne-based freelance writer, published a book about the history of Wintringham calle"The Wintringham Story" In November 2015, ...

Norman Leslie Gallagher (20 September 193126 August 1999) was a controversial Australian trade unionist, and Maoist who led the militant Builders Labourers Federation as federal Secretary and as Victorian State Secretary. Early life and career Gallagher was raised in Melbourne and joined the Builders Labourers Federation (BLF) in 1951. By 1970, he was elected as the BLF's Victorian State Secretary and radically improved pay and conditions on building sites. His militant leadership style initially united union factions but later alienated other union leaders and the Victorian Labor Government. Gallagher was also a high-profile member of the Communist Party of Australia (Marxist-Leninist). He stated: Our union had a long history of concern for the environment. The Sydney union in the early seventies raised the question of the name ' green ban'. We were a bit old fashioned. We still call them 'black bans'. For instance, we were involved in the conservation issues as far back ...

Builders Labourers Federation
The Builders Labourers Federation (BLF) was an Australian trade union that existed from 1911 until 1972, and from 1976 until 1986, when it was permanently deregistered in various Australian states by the federal Hawke Labor government and some state governments of the time. This occurred in the wake of a Royal Commission into corruption by the union. About the same time, BLF federal secretary Norm Gallagher was jailed for corrupt dealings after receiving bribes from building companies that he used to build a beach house. Social and economic justice The BLF fought successful campaigns which became known as the green bans against development projects which it viewed as harmful to the built and natural environment of Sydney and Melbourne. These campaigns included blocking plans to redevelop The Rocks area, Kelly's Bush in Hunters Hill, Centennial Park, the City Baths, Flinders Street Station and the Hotel Windsor. The green bans are now commonly recognised as directly respon ...

Non-profit Organisations Based In Victoria (state)
A nonprofit organization (NPO) or non-profit organisation, also known as a non-business entity, not-for-profit organization, or nonprofit institution, is a legal entity organized and operated for a collective, public or social benefit, in contrast with an entity that operates as a business aiming to generate a profit for its owners. An array of organizations are nonprofit, including some political organizations, schools, business associations, churches, social clubs, and consumer cooperatives.
