Winthrop Eagles Women's Basketball
The Winthrop Eagles women's basketball team represents Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina, United States and competes in the Big South Conference. History Winthrop began play in 1969. From 1982 to 1986, they played in the NAIA before joining the NCAA in 1986. They made an appearance in the WNIT in 2013, their first postseason appearance in school history. They beat Florida Gulf Coast 65–51 to win their first ever postseason game before they lost to the University of Florida 85–53 in the Second Round. In 2014, they won the Big South Conference tournament and won the bid to go to the NCAA Tournament, both firsts for the program. They lost 87–45 to Duke University in the First Round. The Big South Conference is a collegiate athletic conference affiliated with the NCAA's Division I. Duke Blue Devils Women's Basketball
The Duke Blue Devils women's basketball team is the college basketball program representing Duke University in the Atlantic Coast Conference of NCAA Division I. Team history In 1974, Duke hired Emma Jean Howard to teach physical education, and to serve as the head coach of the women's basketball and volleyball teams. Initially, women's basketball was played as a club sport. In the first season, 1974–75, the team played locally, finishing second in the state with a 6–7 record. The women's athletic department merged with the men's athletics in 1975, and the second year is considered as the first official season of the program as a varsity sport. 2014 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament
The 2014 NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament was played in March and April 2014, with the Final Four played April 6–8. The Ohio Valley Conference served as the host institution. The Final Four was played at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. Tennessee continued its streak of making every NCAA women's basketball tournament at 33 consecutive appearances. Connecticut (who made their seventh consecutive Final Four overall) and Notre Dame faced each other in the NCAA Final. Both were undefeated heading into the championship game, making it the first ever match up of two undefeated teams in the championship game. Semeka Randall
Semeka Chantay Randall-Lay (born February 7, 1979, in Cleveland, Ohio) is the current head coach for the Winthrop Eagles women's basketball team. She is also a former collegiate and professional basketball player. She was hired as recruiting coordinator at Wright State in June 2016 after serving as the head coach of the Alabama A&M University women's basketball team for three years. Randall was also head coach of the Ohio Bobcats, from 2008 to 2013. She previously served as an assistant coach of the women's basketball teams at West Virginia University and Michigan State University. Women's National Basketball Association
The Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) is an American professional basketball league. It is composed of twelve teams, all based in the United States. The league was founded on April 22, 1996, as the women's counterpart to the National Basketball Association (NBA), and league play started in 1997. The regular season is played from May to September, with the All Star game being played midway through the season in July (except in Olympic years) and the WNBA Finals at the end of September until the beginning of October. Lynette Woodard
Lynette Woodard (born August 12, 1959) is a retired American basketball Hall of Fame player and former head women's basketball coach at Winthrop University. Woodard made history by becoming the first female member of the Harlem Globetrotters and who, at age 38, began playing as one of the oldest members in the newly formed American women's professional basketball league, the WNBA. While at Wichita North High School, Woodard won two state basketball titles. Woodard went on to play college basketball with the University of Kansas (KU) in 1978, playing there until 1981. She was a four-time All-American at KU, and she averaged 26 points per game and scored 3,649 points in total during her four years there, and was the first KU woman to be honored by having her jersey retired. Rock Hill is the largest city in York County, South Carolina and the fifth-largest city in the state.
