Winsum, Friesland
Winsum is a village in Waadhoeke municipality in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. It had a population of around 1,038 in January 2017. History The village was first mentioned in the 13th century as Winshyum, and means "settlement of Winika (person)". Winsum developed in the middle ages. It is a ''terp'' (artificial living hill) village and one of the tallest, however it is not apparent due to the gentle slope. There was a second ''terp'', however it was excavated in the late-19th century. The Dutch Reformed church dates from the 15th or early-16th century. The tower has been built around 1880. Winsum was home to 546 people in 1840. In 1897, the dairy factory Klimop opened in Winsum. It was in operation until 1939. Only the chimney remains. The windmill Langwert was built in 1974 as a replacement of an 1863 windmill which burnt down on 13 March 1974. It is a ''polder'' mill to drain the excess water from the ''polder''. Waadhoeke
Waadhoeke is a municipality of Friesland in the northern Netherlands. It was established 1 January 2018 and consists of the former municipalities of Franekeradeel, het Bildt, Menameradiel and parts of Littenseradiel, all four of which were dissolved on the same day. The municipality is located in the province of Friesland, in the north of the Netherlands. Waadhoeke is bordered by Harlingen, Terschelling, Ferwerderadiel, Leeuwarden and Súdwest-Fryslân. Terp
A ''terp'', also known as a ''wierde, woerd, warf, warft, werf, werve, wurt'' or ''værft'', is an artificial dwelling mound found on the North European Plain that has been created to provide safe ground during storm surges, high tides and sea or river flooding. The various terms used reflect the regional dialects of the North European region. In English sources, ''terp'' appears to be by far the most common term used. These mounds occur in the coastal parts of the Netherlands (in the provinces of Zeeland, Friesland and Groningen), in southern parts of Denmark and in the north-western parts of Germany where, before dykes were made, floodwater interfered with daily life. Langwert, Winsum
Langwert is a smock mill in Winsum, Friesland, Netherlands which was built in 1979 and is under restoration. It is listed as a Rijksmonument. History ''Langwert'' formerly stood on different site in Winsum, where it was known as the ''Molen van Tjilbert''. It had been built in 1894 by millwright Folkert Wijnstra of Spannum, Friesland to drain an area of . The mill was moved to its current site in 1979, replacing a mill that had been built in 1863 and that had burnt down on 13 March 1974. The work was done by a carpenter from Winsum with assistance from millwright Westra of Franeker, Friesland. The mill was damaged in a storm in September 2011.
