Winston Churchill Collegiate Institute (Winston Churchill CI, WCCI, Churchill) is a public high school in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Located in the Dorset Park neighbourhood of Scarborough, it is owned and operated by the Toronto District School Board (and the former Scarborough Board of Education prior to merger.) The school was named after Winston Churchill, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945 and 1951 to 1955. Although the language of instruction is English, 59 percent of the students do not use English as their primary language, and 26 percent have resided in Canada less than five years. In Spring 2007, there were 554 male students and 467 female students. Since then, the enrollment sits below 1000 with 644 students. Carter, Coleman And Rankin Associates
Carter, Coleman and Rankin Associates was a Toronto-based architectural firm responsible for building several high schools for the then Scarborough Board of Education in the 1950s. The firms' work on these schools were influenced by International Style during the post War period. Architects Harold E. Carter (1885-1956) was an English born and came to Canada to practice in 1909. Carter worked for several firms including Chapman & McGiffin, Sproatt & Rolph and Henry J. Burden and George Roper Gouinlock before forming his own firm in 1948. Carter died in 1956. Ervine Milne Coleman (1900-1980) joined with Carter in 1948 to form Carter and Coleman after working for Canadian Bank of Commerce as staff architect in 1932. Western Ontario Mustangs
The Western Mustangs are the athletic teams that represent Western University in London, Ontario, Canada. The school's athletic program supports 46 varsity teams. Their mascot is a Mustang named J.W. and the school colours are purple and white. The university's varsity teams compete in the Ontario University Athletics conference and the national U Sports organization. Western University offers 21 varsity sports for men and 19 for women which compete in the OUA conference. Winston Churchill received numerous honours and awards throughout his career as a British Army officer, statesman and author. Perhaps the highest of these was the state funeral held at St Paul's Cathedral, after his body had lain in state for three days in Westminster Hall, an honour rarely granted to anyone other than a British monarch or consort. Queen Elizabeth II also broke protocol by giving precedence to a subject, arriving at the cathedral ahead of Churchill's coffin. The funeral also saw one of the largest assemblages of statesmen in the world. Throughout his life, Churchill also accumulated other honours and awards. He was awarded 37 other orders and medals between 1895 and 1964. Leonard Braithwaite
Leonard Austin Braithwaite (October 23, 1923 – March 28, 2012) was a Canadian lawyer and former politician in Ontario, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as a member of the Liberal Party from 1963 to 1975. He was the first Black Canadian to be elected to the Ontario Legislature. Background Braithwaite was born in Toronto, Ontario, to a Barbadian father and a Jamaican mother. Leonard served overseas with the Royal Canadian Air Force in World War II. He received a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Toronto in 1950. WCCI (100.3 FM) is a radio station licensed to Savanna, Illinois, and serving Northwest Illinois, and Eastern Iowa. WCCI has a country music format and is owned by Carroll County Communications. History WCCI was founded by Dennis Voy, who began his radio career at KMAQ in Maquoketa, Iowa in 1958, when that station signed on for the first time. Voy later purchased that station in 1965 and formed Carroll County Broadcasting Company with Randy C. Smith in 1970 with the intent of putting this station on the air.
