Clay, Kentucky
Clay is a home rule-class city in Webster County, Kentucky, in the United States. The population was 1.24K at the 2020 census. Settled in 1837, the city is named for the statesman Henry Clay. In 2022 it became a wet city after a petition put the measure on the ballot. History A post office was established in 1837 when the community was called Ashland, for Henry Clay's Lexington estate. It was renamed Clay in 1854. The city incorporated as "Claysville" in 1860, though the name was shortened to "Clay" in 1872. Geography Clay is located at . The city is concentrated around the intersection of Kentucky Route 109 and Kentucky Route 132, northwest of Providence. The city of Wheatcroft lies just to the west along KY 109. Charles Winstead
Charles Batsell "Charlie" Winstead (May 25, 1891 – August 3, 1973) was an FBI agent in the 1930s–40s, famous for being one of the agents (along with Clarence Hurt and Herman "Ed" Hollis) who shot and killed John Dillinger on July 22, 1934, in Chicago, Illinois. Biography Early life Charlie Winstead was born in Sherman, Texas on May 25, 1891. Before joining the FBI he engaged in various occupations, including decorated service with the US Army in World War I, working as a deputy sheriff in several Texas jurisdictions, and just before joining the Bureau, as a law clerk in the US Attorney's office in El Paso, Texas. He joined the Bureau in July 1926. Nash Nicks Winstead (June 12, 1925 - October 18, 2008) was an American academic. Early life and education He was born in Durham County, North Carolina, in 1925 and educated at North Carolina State College, located in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in agronomy in 1948 and a Master of Science degree in plant pathology in 1951. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, located in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1953. Career Winstead joined the N.C. State faculty as an assistant professor in 1953. In 1965, he was appointed director of the Institute of Biological Sciences and assistant director of agricultural experiment stations at N.C. State. Wendy Winstead
Wendy L. Winsted (September 1, 1947 – 1991) was an American folksinger and author. Marc Morrone credited Winsted with popularizing ferrets as pets in the United States in the mid-1970s. Early life and education Winsted was from Stillwater, Oklahoma, the daughter of Frank Arthor Winsted and Juanita June Preston Winsted. Her mother was a schoolteacher and her father was the city manager of Ponca City, Oklahoma. He also worked in the petroleum industry. She attended Stillwater High School in Oklahoma. Winstead Sheffield Glenndenning Dixon "Doodles" Weaver (May 11, 1911 – January 17, 1983) was an American character actor, comedian, and musician. Born into a wealthy West Coast family, Weaver began his career in radio. In the late 1930s, he performed on Rudy Vallée's radio programs and '' Kraft Music Hall''. He later joined Spike Jones' City Slickers. In 1957, Weaver hosted his own NBC variety show ''The Doodles Weaver Show''. In addition to his radio work, he also recorded a number of comedy records, appeared in films and guest-starred on numerous television series from the 1950s through the 1970s.
