Winnipeg Warriors (minor Pro)
The Winnipeg Warriors were a minor league hockey team that played in the Western Hockey League from 1955 to 1961. Owned by Winnipeg's prominent Perrin family, the Warriors represented the return of professional hockey to Winnipeg after a 27-year absence. History In 1955, the Warriors Club was the first tenant in the brand-new Winnipeg Arena. The grand opening of Winnipeg Arena occurred on October 18, 1955, during the Warriors' WHL season opening game against the Calgary Stampeders (hockey) club. The ceremonial faceoff, conducted by John Draper Perrin, Sr., President of the Warriors, occurred before a standing room crowd of 9,671 fans, the largest in WHL history. Western Hockey League
The Western Hockey League (WHL) is a major junior ice hockey league based in Western Canada and the Northwestern United States. The WHL is one of three leagues that constitutes the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) as the highest level of junior hockey in Canada. Teams play for the Ed Chynoweth Cup, with the winner moving on to play for the Memorial Cup, Canada's national junior championship. WHL teams have won the Memorial Cup 19 times since the league became eligible to compete for the trophy. Many players have been drafted from WHL teams, and have found success at various levels of professional hockey, including the National Hockey League (NHL). Eddie Mazur
Edward Joseph "Spider" Mazur (July 25, 1929 – July 3, 1995) was a Canadian ice hockey forward. He played in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens and Chicago Black Hawks between 1951 and 1956. The rest of his career, which lasted from 1948 to 1966, was spent in the minor leagues. Playing career Mazur started his National Hockey League career with the Montreal Canadiens in 1951. He played in the 1951, 1952 and 1953 playoffs for the Canadiens prior to ever playing a regular season game in the NHL. He became the first player in NHL history to score four playoff goals prior to playing a regular season game. Chris Kreider of the New York Rangers exceeded that mark with five goals in the 2012 postseason. He would also play with the Chicago Black Hawks. He would leave the NHL after the 1957 season. Brian Cullen
Brian Joseph Cullen (born November 11, 1933) is a Canadian retired ice hockey forward. Brian is the brother of the NHL hockey players Barry Cullen and Ray Cullen. Cullen began his National Hockey League career with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1954. He also played for the New York Rangers. Bob Chrystal
Robert Harry Chrystal (April 3, 1930 – January 27, 2023) was a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman. Chrystal played 132 regular season games for the New York Rangers between 1953 and 1955. He scored 11 goals and 14 assists for 25 points. Chrystal died on January 27, 2023, at the age of 92. Gerald Joseph Brisson (September 3, 1937 – January 16, 2013) was a Canadian professional ice hockey left winger. He played 4 games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens during the 1962–63 season. The rest of his career, which lasted from 1957 to 1970, was spent in the minor leagues. He was born in Saint Boniface, Manitoba. He died at his home in Mesa, Arizona on January 16, 2013. Dick Bouchard
Richard Joseph Bouchard (December 2, 1934 – September 10, 1996) was a Canadian ice hockey right winger. Bouchard spent his junior days playing for the Quebec Frontenacs before being called up to the New York Rangers roster to play in his one and only NHL game during the 1954-55 NHL season. He then played two games for the Western Hockey League's Winnipeg Warriors before spending two seasons with the Shawinigan Falls Cataracts of the Quebec Hockey League. In 1958, Bouchard signed with the American Hockey League's Rochester Americans. After a year of inactivity, Bouchard signed for the International Hockey League's St. Paul Saints, spending three seasons with the team before playing one final season for the St. Paul Rangers of the Central Professional Hockey League before retiring. The Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame and Museum is a hall of fame and museum for ice hockey in Manitoba, located on the main level of the Canada Life Centre in downtown Winnipeg. It was established in 1985, when the first honoured members were named and plaques were erected in their honour. The first group of inductees was large in order to recognize the accomplishments of Manitoba players, coaches, builders, and teams at the international, national, provincial, and local levels for many years. Induction ceremonies were held on an annual or bi-annual basis through 1993. Since 1995, the Foundation has added to its honour-roll every second year. The Players Wall is just inside the main entrance in the northeast corner and the Builders Wall is in the northwest corner. Lester Patrick Cup
The Lester Patrick Cup was the championship trophy of the Pacific Coast Hockey League and the Western Hockey League (WHL) from 1949 to 1974. Originally known as the Phil Henderson Cup and then in 1952 it was renamed to the President's Cup. The trophy was again renamed in 1960 to honour Pacific coast hockey pioneer Lester Patrick following his death on June 1 of that year. The Lester Patrick Cup was retired following the demise of the WHL, and is on display at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
