Wingdale, New York
Wingdale is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Dover in Dutchess County, New York, United States. It was first listed as a CDP prior to the 2020 census. The community is in southeastern Dutchess County, in the southern part of Dover. The hamlet of Wingdale is in the northern part of the CDP, while a campus of Olivet University is in the south, on the grounds of the former Harlem Valley State Hospital, and scattered housing occupies the hills in the eastern part of the CDP. The Swamp River, a north-flowing tributary of the Tenmile River, part of the Housatonic River watershed, runs through the center of the CDP. New York State Route 22 runs through the CDP, passing east of Wingdale hamlet. The highway leads north to Dover Plains and south the same distance to Pawling. Harlem Valley–Wingdale Station
Harlem Valley–Wingdale station (formerly State Hospital station) on the Metro-North Railroad's Harlem Line, located in the Wingdale section of Dover, New York. It is adjacent to the site of the former Harlem Valley State Hospital. Trains leave for New York City every two hours, and about every 30 minutes during rush hour. It is from Southeast station, from White Plains, and 69 miles (111 km) from Grand Central Terminal and travel time to Grand Central is approximately one hour, 55 minutes. The station is the southernmost station in the Zone 9 Metro-North fare zone. The distance from Harlem Valley–Wingdale to Dover Plains, the next station to the north, is the longest between two stations on the Harlem Line. Dover Plains is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in Dutchess County, New York, United States. The population was 1,323 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Poughkeepsie– Newburgh– Middletown Metropolitan Statistical Area. Dover Plains is in the northern part of the town of Dover on NY Route 22. Metro-North Railroad has a Harlem Line station here, bringing commuters to New York City. This station was the line's northern terminus until 1852 when the line was carried farther north to Chatham. Harlem Valley State Hospital
Harlem Valley State Hospital, south of the hamlet of Wingdale in the town of Dover, was a New York State psychiatric hospital that operated from 1924 to 1994. History The grounds were originally slated to be a correctional facility, Wingdale Prison, but complaints by the local population caused a re-purposing of the buildings (under construction) into a state hospital. It is located on NY 22/ 55 opposite the Harlem Valley–Wingdale station on the Metro-North Harlem Line. The hospital was closed in 1994 due to budget cuts and was sold to a Long Island-based housing developer, the Benjamin Companies. However, the Benjamin Companies gave up on its plans to pursue the Dover Knolls project - comprising development of a golf-course housing community surrounded by commercial, office, and retail development - when the Great Recession hit and just before the housing market collapsed.
