Windows Mobile Smartphone is a smartphone running the Windows Mobile Standard operating system. The hardware specifications for the devices is known as "Windows Mobile Standard". History The Windows Mobile OS was born out of a brief partnership between Sendo, a British telecommunications manufacturer and Microsoft. The contract provided for source code published by Microsoft, to enable Sendo to create the then-name Windows Pocket PC OS for their products. Microsoft withheld major blocks of the code, passing the work to Taiwanese electronics company HTC, and enabling them to create the HTC Canary, based on the Smartphone/WM Standard OS. Windows Mobile
Windows Mobile is a discontinued family of mobile operating systems developed by Microsoft for smartphones and personal digital assistants. Its origin dated back to Windows CE in 1996, though Windows Mobile itself first appeared in 2000 as Pocket PC 2000 which ran on Pocket PC PDAs. It was renamed "Windows Mobile" in 2003, at which point it came in several versions (similar to the desktop versions of Windows) and was aimed at business and enterprise consumers. When initially released in the mid-2000s, it was to be the portable equivalent of what Windows desktop OS was: a major force in the then-emerging mobile/portable areas. Sendo
Sendo was a British manufacturer and supplier of mobile phones founded in 1998 and based in Birmingham. The company went into administration in June 2005 and its technology was bought by Motorola. The company specialised in low-cost handsets aimed primarily at the pay-as-you-go markets and also high-end Symbian smartphones. History Sendo was created in 1998 by mobile phone experts from Philips and Motorola. In February 2001, Microsoft announced a partnership, in which Microsoft bought $12m of Sendo shares (10%) and a seat on the board. A Pocket PC (P/PC, PPC) is a class of personal digital assistant (PDA) that runs the Windows Mobile or Windows Embedded Compact operating system that has some of the abilities of modern desktop PCs. The name was introduced by Microsoft in 2000 as a rebranding of the Palm-size PC category. Some of these devices also had integrated phone and data capabilities, which were called Pocket PC Phone Edition or simply "Smartphone". Sendo Z100 is a Tri-band phone by Sendo, designed in 2002 and never launched as Sendo sued Microsoft. Background After Microsoft bought shares of Sendo, they started together to develop the new devices operating system called Stinger. Microsoft and Sendo showed a first prototype at the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes in February 2001. The Sendo Z100 was the first prototype implementation of the renamed operating system Smartphone 2002 presented at the CeBIT 2002. Because the phone was multiple times announced and shunted to new release dates, Sendo canceled the phone in November 2002.
