Windhoff Motorcycle
Windhoff motorcycles were built by Windhoff Motorradenbau GmbH in Berlin, Germany from 1924-1933. Production Start of production The factory was located at Bülowstrasse 106, Berlin W57, under the direction of factory owner Hans Windhoff. Windhoff initially produced radiators for cars, trucks, and aircraft, setting up a factory with his brother Fritz in Rheine in 1902, then on his own in Berlin from 1907-24. In 1924, he entered the burgeoning German motorcycle market with a water-cooled two-stroke of 125cc. The engine was built under license from a design by :de:Hugo Ruppe, Hugo Ruppe, whose ''ladepumpe'' (an extra piston used as a supercharger to compress the fuel/air mix) design was used most successfully by DKW in their Grand Prix racers. Windhoff is a German manufacturer of specialised railways rolling stock, and heavy industrial plant. The company was founded in 1889. The company is well known for its CargoSprinter rail vehicle, and derivatives. History The company started out as the ' (Machine Factory of Rheine) in Rheine near Münster, Germany in 1889 manufacturing machines for the weaving industry and founded by Rudolf Windhoff. By 1901 the company was employing over 100 people. As similar control mechanisms were used for steam-driven automated weaving looms and for stream-driven railway Transfer table, traversers and Railway turntable, turntables, Rudolf Windhoff also founded the ' (Windhoff Brothers' Engine and Vehicle Factory). Ariel Square Four
The Square Four is a motorcycle produced by Ariel between 1931 and 1959, designed by Edward Turner, who devised the Square Four engine in 1928. At this time he was looking for work, showing drawings of his engine design to motorcycle manufacturers. The early engine with "two transverse crankshafts" was essentially a pair of 'across frame' OHC parallel twins joined by their geared central flywheels, with a four-cylinder block (or ''Monobloc'') and single head. The idea for the engine was rejected by BSA, but adopted by Ariel. Thus it became the Ariel Square Four. In 1966 Phil Vincent wrote in ''Motor Cycle'': "Alas, in 1959 the Square Four went out of production, a victim of the modern trend towards small, high-revving modern power units. Villiers Engineering was a manufacturer of motorcycles and cycle parts, and an engineering company based in Villiers Street, Wolverhampton, England. Early history In the 1890s John Marston's Sunbeam had become extremely successful by relying on high quality of production and finish. But Marston was dissatisfied with the pedals on his machines, which he bought in. In 1890 he dispatched his son Charles to the US on a selling trip, but included in his instructions that Charles must discuss pedal engineering with Pratt and Whitney in Hartford, Connecticut and come back with a high-class pedal and the machinery for making it. Charles said that the Villiers Engineering Co. was "the ultimate fruit" of his trip to the US, being impressed by the production system and the labour saving devices.
