Wimmelbilderbuch
A ''Wimmelbilderbuch'' (German, literally "teeming picture book"), wimmelbook, or hidden picture book is a type of large-format, wordless picture book. It is characterized by full-spread drawings (sometimes across gatefold pages) depicting scenes richly detailed with humans, animals, and objects. Typically made for children, the drawings are filled with characters and items that may be discovered. Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Brueghel the Elder and Hans Jurgen Press are regarded as the fathers of the format. Contemporary wimmelbook authors include Richard Scarry, , Ali Mitgutsch, Rotraut Susanne Berner, and Eva Scherbarth. In the United Kingdom and the United States, wimmelbooks gained popularity with the success of the ''Where's Wally?'' series by the British illustrator Martin Handford. Ali Mitgutsch
Alfons “Ali” Mitgutsch (; 21 August 1935 – 10 January 2022) was a German author of picture books and a professional advertising Illustrator. As a child the Mitgutsch family was evacuated to Allgäu in World War II due to bombing in Munich. After returning to Munich he trained at Graphical Academy as a lithographer. In the 1960s, Kurt Seelmann, a child psychologist inspired him to create a special kind of picture book for children. Mitgutsch became famous for his Wimmelbilder-books. These books show everyday scenes in a single painting across the pages on top. ''Rundherum in meiner Stadt'' (Around in my city) released in 1968 is the first book in the series. Rotraut Susanne Berner
Rotraut Susanne Berner (born 26 August 1948, in Stuttgart) is a German graphic designer and illustrator. She illustrated ''The Number Devil'' by Hans Magnus Enzensberger. She is well known for a series of popular children's book, called Wimmelbilderbuch, which have attained a worldwide circulation of close to 500,000 copies in fifteen countries. Working as a freelance illustrator, she has focused on books for children and young adults, illustrating more than 80 such books and designing over 800 book covers. For her contribution as a children's illustrator Berner was a finalist for the biennial, international Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2002, 2004, and 2014,"2002" ''Hans Christian Andersen Awards''. |
Where's Wally?
''Where's Wally?'' (called ''Where's Waldo?'' in North America) is a British series of children's puzzle books created by English illustrator Martin Handford. The books consist of a series of detailed double-page spread illustrations depicting dozens or more people doing a variety of amusing things at a given location. Readers are challenged to find a character named Wally hidden in the group. Wally is identified by his red-and-white-striped shirt, bobble hat, and glasses, but many illustrations contain red herrings involving deceptive use of red-and-white striped objects. Later entries in the long-running book series added other targets for readers to find in each illustration.
