Wilston Samuel Jackson
Wilston Samuel Jackson (17 May 1927–15 September 2018) was Britain's first black train driver. Known as 'Bill', he was born in Jamaica in 1927 and moved to the UK as part of the Windrush generation. After working as a fireman, he was appointed train driver in 1962. At one point he drove the ''Flying Scotsman'' locomotive. He later emigrated to Zambia where he taught people how to drive trains. Wilston is a northern suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Wilston had a population of 3,937 people. Geography Wilston is located by road north of the Brisbane GPO. It has a mixture of old and new styles of architecture, from workers' cottages to modern architect-designed homes on Wilston Hill. Wilston is home to many professionals, including many medical professionals, due to its inner city location, proximity to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital and views of the city that are available from more elevated streets. In recent years, the area has been transformed by the revamping of Kedron Brook Road, an early precursor to the City Council's urban renewal process that was to roll out across much of inner Brisbane. A fireman, stoker or watertender is a person whose occupation it is to tend the fire for the running of a boiler, heating a building, or powering a steam engine. Much of the job is hard physical labor, such as shoveling fuel, typically coal, into the boiler's firebox. On steam locomotives the title ''fireman'' is usually used, while on steamships and stationary steam engines, such as those driving saw mills, the title is usually ''stoker'' (although the British Merchant Navy did use ''fireman''). LNER Class A3 4472 ''Flying Scotsman'' is a 4-6-2 Pacific steam locomotive built in 1923 for the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) at Doncaster Works to a design of Nigel Gresley. It was employed on long-distance express East Coast Main Line trains by the LNER and its successors, British Railways Eastern and North-Eastern Regions, notably on the London to Edinburgh '' Flying Scotsman'' train service after which it was named.
