Wilmer, Texas
Wilmer is a city in Dallas County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,682 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth– Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. Geography Wilmer is located at (32.590743, –96.682619). It is situated along Interstate 45 in southeastern Dallas County, approximately south of downtown Dallas. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , of which is land and , or 0.82%, is water. History The area was initially settled by Andrew K. Gray before 1850. The settlement was originally known as Prairie Valley when the Houston and Texas Central Railroad arrived in 1872. In 1884, the post office in Prairie Valley was renamed Wilmer, after A.J. Wilmer, a conductor on the Houston and Texas Central line. The population was estimated at 100 in 1890, with several stores and businesses operation in the community. Wilmer Alejandro Flores Garcia (born August 6, 1991), nicknamed "Catire", is a Venezuelan professional baseball infielder for the San Francisco Giants of Major League Baseball (MLB). Wilmer Leon Fields (August 2, 1922 – June 4, 2004) was an American baseball player who was a household name in the Negro leagues and other baseball circuits between the 1940s and 1950s. Born in Manassas, Virginia, Fields was a versatile two-way player in the Negro leagues, and also played in Canada and several Latin American leagues, including Mexico, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Cuba, Panama, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic. In most leagues he was a pitcher, but played at third base or outfield in games when he was not scheduled to pitch. His consistent batting and pitching skills helped him capture the Most Valuable Player award on many occasions throughout the course of his distinguished career. Wilmer is an unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Mobile County, Alabama, Mobile County, Alabama, United States. History Wilmer was named in honor of Richard Hooker Wilmer, the second bishop of Alabama in the Episcopal Church (United States), Episcopal Church. A post office first opened under the name Wilmer in 1894. Wilmer's first mayor was Perry Walter Evans, who also founded Wilmer's fire department. In the 1990's Wilmer gained notoriety for changing the local speed limit on six different occasions in a sort period of time, in large part reportedly as part of a Speed limit enforcement, speed trap scheme to raise local revenues. Wilmer Clemont Fields (March 16, 1922 – December 2, 2018) was an American Southern Baptist minister, public relations executive, newspaper editor, and the (co-)author or editor of 30 books. He was a pastor in Louisiana, Kentucky and Mississippi. He was the editor of ''The Baptist Record'' and ''Baptist Program'', a director of the Baptist Press, and the vice president for public relations for the executive committee of the Southern Baptist Convention.
