Willy Lauwers
Willy Lauwers, also known as 'Rupske' Lauwers, (16 April 1936 – 12 April 1959) was a professional cyclist. He was born in Hemiksem, Belgium. Lauwers owned his nickname to the way he moved on his bicycle like a caterpillar ("rups" in Dutch), rocking and wriggling. In addition, thanks to his agility on the bike, he managed to maneuver through the smallest gaps in the peloton. As the son of former cyclist Stan Lauwers, he was born to become a cyclist. In 1957, at the age of 21, he won the Six Days of Antwerp together with Reginald Arnold and Ferdinando Terruzzi. In the same year he was also the best in Leuven, Oudenaarde, Moerbeke and in Sint-Jansteen, the Netherlands. He seemed to have a great career, both on the track and on the road. Hemiksem
Hemiksem (, historical spellings ''Heymissen'' and ''Hemixem'') is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Antwerp. The municipality only comprises the town of Hemiksem proper. In 2021, Hemiksem had a total population of 11,722. The total area is 5.44 km². History The village was first mentioned in 1155 as Hamincsem. In 1246, Cistercian monks established St. Bernard's Abbey, Hemiksem near the Scheldt, and became Lords of the ''heerlijkheid'' (landed estate) Hemiksem. The area used to be heavily forest. In 1358, the first brickworks was established, but it was an agricultural area until the 19th century. During the 19th century, Hemiksem started to industrialise and grow. Sights The most notable sight in Hemiksem is the 13th century St. Bernard's Abbey, which now houses the town hall and police headquarters, after having undergone extensive renovations in the past decade. Scheldeprijs
The Scheldeprijs is a cycling race in Flanders and the Netherlands which starts in Terneuzen, crosses the Scheldt River, and finishes in Schoten. Until 2018 it was held entirely in Belgium. The event, ranked as a 1.HC race on the UCI Europe Tour, features mostly sprinters on its roll of honour, as it is held on all-flat roads over roughly 200 kilometres. First held in 1907, it is the oldest still-existing cycling event in Flanders, notably six years older than the Tour of Flanders '' monument race''. The race had its only interruptions during both World Wars and celebrated its 100th edition in 2012. German sprinter Marcel Kittel holds the record with five wins. Tirador (velodrome)
Tirador ( ca, Velòdrom del Tirador or ''Velòdrom de Tirador'') is a velodrome in Palma (Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain). It is an outdoor track cycling, opened in 1903 and was the most important velodrome built in Spain for six decades until the construction of the Velódromo de Anoeta (San Sebastián) in 1965. It was closed in 1973 and still existing, but no longer in use. Since 2015 it is municipally owned, despite the fact that in recent years it has suffered a process of abandonment and progressive degradation. Reginald Arnold
Reginald Athelstane Arnold (9 October 1924 – 23 July 2017) was an Australian racing cyclist. Arnold's cycling career began in 1941, when his brothers gave him a bicycle for his birthday. Despite being blind in one eye, Arnold joined Ashfield cycling club in Sydney where he made a name for himself as a capable track sprinter, winning several state titles. After World War II, Arnold competed on the European cycling circuit, and won numerous road and track races there as well as in America and Australia between 1946 and 1963. In 1952 and 1957, he was a member of the team which won the European madison championships (the de facto world title). He specialised in six-day racing and competed in 103 six-day events around the world. In 2000, Arnold was awarded the Australian Sports Medal (ASM) for being part of the world number one team for day cycle races for a number of years.
