Willie Ernest "Pee Wee" Powell (October 30, 1903 – May 16, 1987) was an American baseball pitcher in the Negro league baseball, Negro leagues. He played from 1925 to 1934, playing mostly with the Chicago American Giants. He threw a no-hitter in 1927. In baseball, the pitcher is the player who throws ("pitches") the baseball from the pitcher's mound toward the catcher to begin each play, with the goal of retiring a batter, who attempts to either make contact with the pitched ball or draw a walk. In the numbering system used to record defensive plays, the pitcher is assigned the number 1. The pitcher is often considered the most important player on the defensive side of the game, and as such is situated at the right end of the defensive spectrum. There are many different types of pitchers, such as the starting pitcher, relief pitcher, middle reliever, lefty specialist, setup man, and the closer. Traditionally, the pitcher also bats. No-hitter
In baseball, a no-hitter is a game in which a team was not able to record a hit. Major League Baseball (MLB) officially defines a no-hitter as a completed game in which a team that batted in at least nine innings recorded no hits. A pitcher who prevents the opposing team from achieving a hit is said to have "thrown a no-hitter". In most cases, no-hitters are recorded by a single pitcher who throws a complete game; one thrown by two or more pitchers is a combined no-hitter. A no-hitter is a rare accomplishment for a pitcher or pitching staff—only 318 have been thrown in MLB history since 1876, an average of about two per year. William Powell (baseball)
William Henry Powell (May 8, 1919 – August 21, 2004) was an American Negro league pitcher for the Birmingham Black Barons between 1946 and 1948. Career A native of Comer, Georgia, Powell served in the United States Army during World War II. He joined the Birmingham Black Barons in 1946 as one of the club's "big four" starting pitchers along with Jay Heard, Curtis Hollingsworth and Jimmy Newberry. He was the starting and winning pitcher in the first 1948 East–West All-Star Game, and also started two games for the Black Barons in their 1948 Negro World Series loss to the Homestead Grays. Powell earned another All-Star nomination in 1950, finishing the year with a 15-4 win–loss record. Black Barons owner Tom Hayes then released Powell so that he could tryout for the Sacramento Solons of the Pacific Coast League. Akron Black Tyrites
The Akron Black Tyrites were a Negro league baseball team that played out another team's schedule for a portion of a single season. They were based in Akron, Ohio, and were a member team of the Negro National League (II). They are also known as the Akron Grays. The Columbus Blue Birds finished last in the first half of the 1933 season, were disbanded and ended up merging with the Tyrites, one of the top independent Negro league teams of their day.
