Willie Burns
William Tatum Burns (January 12, 1916 – February 10, 1966) was an American Negro league pitcher between 1935 and 1945. A native of West Palm Beach, Florida, Burns made his Negro league debut in 1935 with the Newark Dodgers. He went on to play for several teams, finishing his career in 1945 with the New York Cubans and the New York Black Yankees The New York Black Yankees were a professional Negro league baseball team based in New York City; Paterson, New Jersey; and Rochester, New York. In baseball, the pitcher is the player who throws ("pitches") the baseball from the pitcher's mound toward the catcher to begin each play, with the goal of retiring a batter, who attempts to either make contact with the pitched ball or draw a walk. In the numbering system used to record defensive plays, the pitcher is assigned the number 1. The pitcher is often considered the most important player on the defensive side of the game, and as such is situated at the right end of the defensive spectrum.
