Williams Creek School, Gillespie County, Texas
Williams Creek School is located at 5501 South Ranch to Market Road 1623 in Gillespie County, in the U.S. state of Texas. Although now consolidated with the community of Stonewall, the school is actually located south of there in the ghost town of Albert. It was established in 1891 as the Albert School, and was originally a log cabin on Williams Creek. Six years later, it was moved farther from the creek onto a larger piece of land. A new building was constructed of native limestone. Up until World War I, classes were taught exclusively in the German language. The war brought a new law that not only required all classes, except foreign languages, to be in English but also banned the use of German on school property. During the 1920–1921 school year, Lyndon B. Johnson was an 8th-grade student in the one-room school. An additional room was added in 1922 to accommodate expanded enrollment. Ranch to Market Road 1623 (RM 1623) is a farm to market road in Gillespie and Blanco counties, Texas. Route description RM 1623 begins in eastern Gillespie County at an intersection with RM 2721. It travels to the south into Stonewall, where it crosses Ranch Road 1, and has a one-block eastward concurrency with US 290 before continuing southward. It then turns to the southeast and crosses into Blanco County. The route intersects RM 1888 before turning to the east and running along the north bank of the Blanco River into Blanco. The RM 1623 designation ends at US 281 in central Blanco; the roadway continues as Loop 163. History FM 1623 was first designated in Blanco County in 1951, and ran from US 281 in Blanco to the west approximately . Stonewall, Texas
Stonewall is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Gillespie County, Texas, United States. The population was 525 at the 2010 census. It was named for Confederate General Thomas J. (Stonewall) Jackson, by Israel P. Nunez who established a stage station near the site in 1870. Stonewall was the home of former U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson, and the "LBJ Ranch" is located nearby. Geography Stonewall is located in eastern Gillespie County on the Pedernales River, in the Hill Country of central Texas. U.S. Route 290 passes through the community, leading west to Fredericksburg, the Gillespie County seat, and east to Johnson City. Stonewall is west of Austin and north of San Antonio. Gillespie County is a county located on the Edwards Plateau in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 26,725. The county seat is Fredericksburg. It is located in the heart of the rural Texas Hill Country in Central Texas. Gillespie is named for Robert Addison Gillespie, a soldier in the Mexican–American War. Albert, originally Martinsburg, is a ghost town southeast of Fredericksburg and west of the Blanco County line in southeastern Gillespie County, Texas, United States. The town was a stop on the Fredericksburg-Blanco stage route and in 1967 became a stop on the President's Ranch Trail. In late October 2007, the town was put up for sale on the auction website eBay. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark (RTHL) is a designation awarded by the Texas Historical Commission for historically and architecturally significant properties in the U.S. state of Texas. RTHL is a legal designation and the highest honor the state can bestow on a historic structure. Purchase and display of a historical marker is a required component of the RTHL designation process. Because it is a legal designation, owners of RTHL-designated structures must give 60 days' notice before any alterations are made to the exterior of the structure.
