William Yee
Hon Wing William Yee (born 18 July 1928) was a Fijian engineer and politician. He was the first Chinese Fijian to be elected to the Legislative Council. Biography Yee was born in Zhongshan in China, before moving to Fiji as a child. He attended the Marist Brothers High School in Suva and St Bede's College in Canterbury. He then studied engineering at the University of Auckland, and was the first Fijian Chinese to earn a degree in the subject. Political career The 1966 general elections were the first in which Chinese Fijians were able to vote. Yee was an Alliance Party candidate in the three-seat General constituency of Suva, and was elected by a margin of 90 votes. Legislative Council Of Fiji
The Legislative Council of Fiji was the colonial precursor to the present-day Parliament, which came into existence when Fiji became independent on 10 October 1970. The first Legislative Council Immediately after Fiji was ceded to the United Kingdom, on 10 October 1874, the first Governor, Sir Hercules Robinson, established an Executive Council with himself as President and comprising six other Europeans. This was a temporary measure to make policy decisions necessary to found and legitimise the new Colonial Government and to carry out the day-to-day affairs of the Government. With the arrival of Sir Arthur Gordon, on 1 September 1875, a permanent machinery for governing the new colony was established. March 1977 Fijian General Election
General elections were held in Fiji between 19 March and 2 April 1977. As a result of a split in the ethnic Fijian vote, the ruling Alliance Party of Prime Minister Kamisese Mara suffered a narrow defeat. Although the Alliance Party received the most votes, it won only 24 seats, two fewer than the Indo-Fijian-dominated National Federation Party (NFP). One seat was won by the Fijian Nationalist Party, with the remaining seat going to an independent candidate, Osea Gavidi. Although the NFP emerged as the largest party, Governor-General George Cakobau asked Mara to form a new government, claiming that he had the support of the majority of the House. Yat Sen School
Yat Sen Primary and Secondary School () is a Chinese primary and secondary school located in Suva, Fiji. It was opened on June 15, 1936, under the name of Chinese School. In 1976, the name was changed to Yat Sen, after Sun Yat-Sen, a Chinese revolutionary, and a founding father of the Republic of China. It is supported by Board of the Chinese Education Society, the PTFA, and old ex-scholars. Emphasis is placed on academic excellence and self-discipline. From 17 students initially, it has grown to over 1,100 students. Approximately 400 are in the secondary school, and 700 in the primary school. The school has become in the first in the nation to have its own Artificial Intelligence (AI) facility, that was donated from Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong, a province in China.
