William Worton
William Arthur Worton (January 4, 1897 – July 25, 1973) was a Marine Corps major general who served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was also an interim Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department from June 1949 to 1950. Early life Worton was born on January 4, 1897, in Boston, Massachusetts. He first attended the Boston Latin School and subsequently Harvard University, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree. Worton then attended the Boston University Law School and graduated with Bachelor of Laws degree. Worton enlisted in the Massachusetts Naval Militia, where he was commissioned second lieutenant and was subsequently transferred to the Marine Corps Reserve with the rank of first lieutenant on March 29, 1917. He was assigned to the 79th Company, 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment and sent overseas. 6th Marine Regiment (United States)
The 6th Marine Regiment (also referred to as "6th Marines") is an infantry regiment of the United States Marine Corps based at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. The regiment falls under the command of the 2nd Marine Division of the II Marine Expeditionary Force. Its combat history dates back to World War I when they were part of the American Expeditionary Force. They fought in the Pacific Theater in World War II, most notably at the battles of Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Battle of Saipan, Saipan, Battle of Tinian, Tinian and Battle of Okinawa, Okinawa. More recently, the regiment has seen combat during the Gulf War and in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines (2/6) is an infantry battalion in the United States Marine Corps based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Also known as "The Ready Battalion" or "2/6 Spartans", it consists of approximately 800 Marines and Sailors and falls under the command of the 6th Marine Regiment and the 2nd Marine Division.
