William Wishart
:''See also William Wishart (other)'' William Wishart (or Wischard) (died 28 May 1279) was a 13th-century Bishop of St. Andrews. He was postulated to the see of St. Andrews (''Cell Rígmonaid'' or ''Cill Rìmhinn'') while holding the position as Bishop-elect of Glasgow, which he resigned when, on 2 June 1271, he was elected to that vacant see. He was succeeded at Glasgow by his cousin (''consanguieus''), Robert Wishart. His election to St. Andrews was notable, because apparently the bishopric's Céli Dé community were excluded from the election. Pope Gregory X charged the Bishop of Moray, the Bishop of Aberdeen, and the Bishop of Argyll, to look over the character of the elect and to investigate the legitimacy of the election, of the latter of which the Pope had suspicions. William Wishart (primus)
William Wishart (1660–1729) was a Church of Scotland minister and the Principal of Edinburgh University from 1716 to 1728. He is not to be confused with his son William Wishart (secundus), who was subsequently the Principal of Edinburgh University from 1736 to 1754. Life He was born the son of Rev William Wishart (1621–1692), minister of Kinneil and his wife Christian Burne, Daughter of Richard Burne of Linlithgow. He was the grandson of Sir John Wishart (1570-1607) and Jean (Douglas) Wishart, the daughter of William Douglas, 9th Earl of Angus and his wife, Agnes Keith, daughter of William Keith, 3rd Earl Marischal. His brothers included Admiral Sir James Wishart and Sir George Wishart of Cliftonhall. William was privately tutored, then studied divinity at Edinburgh University, graduating MA in 1680. William Wishart (secundus)
William Wishart (secundus) (1691/92–1753) was a Scottish clergyman who served as the Principal of Edinburgh University from 1736 to 1753. He served as Moderator of the General Assembly for the Church of Scotland in 1745. Life He was born in Leith the son of William Wishart where his father was minister of South Leith Parish Church. In 1707 his father became minister of Tron Kirk in central Edinburgh and the family moved to the Royal Mile. His father became Principal of Edinburgh University in 1716 and served that role until 1730. Wishart studied divinity at Edinburgh University (prior to his father's principalship) and was ordained by the Church of Scotland as minister of the Scots Church (Founders Hall) in London around 1710.
