William Winstead Thomas
William Winstead Thomas (1848–1904) (including two photos) was an American insurance company president and an architect. He was president of the Southern Mutual Insurance Company. Several of his works are listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places for their architecture. He designed the Octagon Mode architecture, Octagon Mode Seney-Stovall Chapel, a $10,000 structure octagonal red brick building funded by George I. Seney. Monroe is a city in Walton County, Georgia, United States, serving as the county seat. It is located both one hour east of Atlanta via US 78 and GA 138 to I-20 and east of Hartsfield–Jackson International Airport and is one of the exurban cities in the Atlanta metropolitan area. The population was 13,234 at the 2010 U.S. census and 13,673 at the 2019 estimate. History Monroe was founded in 1818 as seat of the newly formed Walton County. It was incorporated as a town in 1821 and as a city in 1896. Monroe was a major cotton producer in the state during the 1900s. The two main cotton mills in Monroe used to be the driving economic force in the region. McDaniel-Tichenor House
The McDaniel-Tichenor House, located in Monroe, Georgia, United States was built in 1887 for retiring Governor Henry McDaniel. Originally designed by Athens, Georgia architect William Winstead Thomas (1848-1904) in the then-popular Victorian Italianate Villa style, the house was extensively remodeled in the 1930s by Nashville architect, and son-in-law of Edgar and Gipsy Tichenor, Francis Boddie Warfield. Remade in the Neoclassical style popular with prominent southerners at the time, the Tichenors also added modern indoor plumbing, electricity and heating systems. Though the interior was reconfigured as well, much of the original woodwork, doors and inlaid marbleized mantels are original. The eclectically furnished interior features pieces dating from the late 18th century up until the mid-20th.
