William Williams (Creuddynfab)
William Williams (1814–69), also known by the bardic name Creuddynfab, was a Welsh poet and literary critic. Biography Creuddynfab was born 20 August 1814 at Tŷ Du on the Creuddyn peninsula, and as the eldest child of stone mason Enoch Williams' large family in received little education. After working on farms from an early age, he moved to Manchester to work in a warehouse before finding employment with the Huddersfield district railway company, serving as stationmaster in Oldham and Stalybridge. During his sixteen years in Stalybridge he built a friendship with Ceiriog and became an important member of the Cymreigyddion Society The Cymreigyddion Society ( cy, Cymdeithas y Cymreigyddion) was a London-based Welsh social, cultural and debating society, which existed from 1794 or 1795 until about 1855. John Ceiriog Hughes
John Ceiriog Hughes (25 September 1832 – 23 April 1887) was a Welsh poet and collector of Welsh folk tunes, sometimes termed a Robert Burns of Wales. He was born at Penybryn Farm, overlooking the village of Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog in the Ceiriog Valley of north-east Wales, then in Denbighshire, now part of Wrexham County Borough. One of eight children, he was a favourite of his mother, Phoebe, a midwife and herbal-medicine expert. Life At 18, Hughes left the village for Manchester to work as a grocer. He opened his own shop in 1854. There he met and was befriended and influenced by William Williams (Creuddynfab), a station master in the Pennines, who found him a job on the railway. Williams had been appointed first secretary of the National Eisteddfod Society. Hughes decided to sell his shop and concentrate on writing poetry, but he also started to drink heavily. Cymreigyddion Society
The Cymreigyddion Society ( cy, Cymdeithas y Cymreigyddion) was a London-based Welsh social, cultural and debating society, which existed from 1794 or 1795 until about 1855. History The Cymreigyddion Society was stated in later accounts to have been founded in 1795, although a reference to a meeting on 19 November 1794 suggests that it may have assembled informally at a slightly earlier date. It was established by a group of twelve expatriate Welshmen resident in London, most if not all of whom were members of the existing Gwyneddigion Society (founded 1770), and who included Jac Glan-y-gors (John Jones). At a slightly later date Iolo Morganwg (Edward Williams) was also a member. The last record of the Society's existence, when it was clearly barely surviving, is from 1855; and it had disappeared by 1858.
