William Turnbull (bishop)
William Turnbull (died 1454) was a Scottish politician and bishop, credited with founding Jedburgh Grammar School and the University of Glasgow. He served as the Bishop of Glasgow, from 1448 to 1454 and was the first Chancellor of the University of Glasgow. Biography He came from Bedrule in the Scottish Borders, where a plaque in the local church is erected in his memory. He studied arts at the University of St Andrews (1419), canon law at the University of Leuven, and went on to study at the University of Pavia, Italy, for a doctorate in canon law (1439). Upon his return to Scotland, he befriended King James II and became Keeper of the Privy Seal (1440–1448) and ''Royal Secretary'' (1441–1442). In 1447 he was appointed Bishop of Dunkeld, then a year later Bishop of Glasgow which he held until his death in 1454. William Turnbull (cricketer)
William Fleming Turnbull (26 January 1879 — 26 December 1959) was a Scottish first-class cricketer. Turnbull was born at Falkirk in January 1879. He was educated at Daniel Stewart’s College. A club cricketer for Stewart's Former Pupils, Turnbull made his debut in first-class cricket for Scotland against Ireland at Glasgow in 1911. He made three further first-class appearances for Scotland, playing against the touring Indians in 1911 at Galashiels, and twice against the touring South Africans in 1912 at Glasgow and Edinburgh. In his four first-class appearances, Turnbull scored 78 runs at an average of 13.00, with a highest score of 41 not out. Outside of cricket, Turnbull was employed as a club master at Turnhouse Golf Club. In July 1935, he was fined 10 shillings for driving a motor vehicle without a license.Drivers fined at Dunfermline. William Robert Jolyon Turnbull (25 January 1956 – 31 August 2022) was an English television and radio presenter and journalist, whose broadcasting career spanned over four decades. He began his career working for radio stations including Radio Clyde and BBC Radio 4's ''Today''. He presented BBC News 24 and BBC Radio 5 Live before taking on his most notable role as one of the main presenters of ''BBC Breakfast'', a position he held for fifteen years between 2001 and 2016. William Turnbull (11 January 1922 – 15 November 2012) was a Scottish artist. Early life in the 19s William Turnbull was born in 1922 in Dundee, to John Turnbull and Anne Turnbull. Fascinated by art from an early age, Turnbull initially learned to draw by copying illustrations from magazines. Early career When his father lost his job as a shipyard engineer during the Great Depression, a 15-year-old Turnbull was forced to leave school and find part-time work, first as a labourer and then painting film posters. He began attending an evening drawing class at Dundee University where he was taught by landscape artist James Macintosh Patrick and illustrator Fred Mould. In 1939, he obtained a position at DC Thomson, where he had his first real exposure to commercial illustration. William Turnbull (1868 – 22 June 1941) was an architect based in Wellington, New Zealand. He was the fourth and youngest son of architect Thomas Turnbull. He joined his father's practice in 1882 and became a partner in 1891. He was born in San Francisco where his father was working at the time. He moved to New Zealand with his family in 1871. In his younger years, he played rugby union at Poneke Football Club in Kilbirnie. Turnbull designed a large house including three rooms to hold a library for bibliophile Alexander Turnbull (no relation) in 1914. The outbreak of World War I caused the construction to be delayed until late 1915, with Alexander Turnbull moving in the following year. Turnbull House was used as a library until 1973, and the collection formed the nucleus of the national library collection. William Barclay Turnbull
William Barclay David Donald Turnbull (1811–63) was a Scottish antiquary, born at Edinburgh. He studied law, and was admitted as an advocate at the Scottish bar 1832, but devoted much time to the study of the antiquities and older literature of Great Britain. In 1834, he founded the Abbotsford Club, which preserved manuscripts and old editions of written material. In 1859 he was employed by the Record Commission, but on account of his Catholicism he was attacked by the ultra-Protestant party and compelled to resign. He was an industrious and careful editor, and did excellent service by his editions of Middle English and early modern English poetry. His work as genealogist and historical editor was of value.
