William Tennant (poet)
William Tennant (16 May 1784 – 14 October 1848) was a Scottish scholar and poet. Life He was born at Anstruther, Fife. He was lame from childhood. His father sent him to the University of St Andrews, where he remained for two years, and on his return he became clerk to one of his brothers, a corn factor. In his leisure time he mastered Hebrew as well as German and Italian. His study of Italian verse bore fruit in the mock-heroic poem of ''Anster Fair'' (1812), which gave an amusing account of the marriage of "Maggie Lauder," the heroine of the popular Scottish ballad. It was written in the ''ottava rima'' adopted a few years later by "the ingenious brothers Whistlecraft" (John Hookham Frere), and turned to such brilliant account by Byron in ''Don Juan''. The poem, unhackneyed in form, full of fantastic classical allusions applied to the simple story, and brimming over with humour, had an immediate success. William Tennant (Royal Navy Officer)
Admiral Sir William George Tennant (2 January 1890 – 26 July 1963) was a British naval officer. He was lauded for overseeing the successful evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940. Tennant subsequently served as captain of the battlecruiser , when it searched for German capital ships in the Atlantic. He remained in this capacity when the ''Repulse'' was sunk by the Japanese along with in the South China Sea on 10 December 1941, three days after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He later aided in the setup of the Mulberry harbours and the Pluto pipelines, a crucial part of the success of Operation Overlord. Biography Born in Upton-upon-Severn and educated at nearby Hanley Castle Grammar School, Tennant joined the Royal Navy in 1905 at the age of 15, as a naval cadet at Britannia Royal Naval College. William Tennant (United Irishmen)
William Tennant (1759–1832), often spelled William Tennent, was an Ulster Presbyterian banker and a leading member in Belfast of the Society of the United Irishmen who, in 1798, sought by insurrection to secure a representative and independent government for Ireland. After a period of imprisonment he returned to the commercial and civic of Belfast, in 1810 helping to found what is today the Royal Belfast Academical Institution. Early life William Tennant was born in 1759 near Ballymoney, County Antrim, in the Kingdom of Ireland, the eldest eight children born to Reverend John Tennant and his wife Ann Patton. His father had been among the first Scottish Anti-Bugher Presbyterian ministers to settle in Ulster. Sir William Tennant Gairdner (8 November 1824 – 28 June 1907) was a Scottish Professor of Medicine in the University of Glasgow. Early life William Tennant Gardiner was born in Edinburgh, the son of physician John Gairdner and his wife, Susanna Tennant.''Scotland, Select Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950'' He was the elder brother of the historian James Gairdner. He was educated at the Edinburgh Institution and then in his father's profession at the University of Edinburgh, graduating as M.D. in 1845. Immediately after his graduation he went to Rome for six months. He was taught surgery by Prof Monro and Dr Robert Halliday Gunning. Medical career In 1850 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh; and a year or two later was appointed physician and pathologist to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (RIE).
