William T. Haines
William Thomas Haines (August 7, 1854 – June 4, 1919) was an American politician and the 49th Governor of Maine. Early years William Thomas Haines was born in Levant, Maine on August 7, 1854. As an undergraduate at the University of Maine, he founded the Eternal Companions Society on the Orono Campus in 1875. The fraternity was later chartered as the Beta Eta chapter of Beta Theta Pi and Haines was issued roll number 1 in the new organization. He graduated as Valedictorian of the University of Maine class of 1876 and went on to study law at Albany Law School where he completed his LL.B. degree in 1878. In May, 1879, Haines settled at Oakland (then West Waterville), Kennebec County, Maine, and commenced the practice of law. He remained there until October, 1880. He then moved to Waterville, Maine. Maine House Of Representatives
The Maine House of Representatives is the lower house of the Maine Legislature. The House consists of 151 voting members and three nonvoting members. The voting members represent an equal number of districts across the state and are elected via plurality voting. The nonvoting members represent three of Maine's Native American tribes, though two tribes have declined to send representatives. Each voting member of the House represents around 9,000 citizens of the state. Because it is a part-time position, members of the Maine House of Representatives usually have outside employment as well. Members are limited to four consecutive terms of two years each, but may run again after two years. The House meets at the Maine State House in Augusta. Carl Milliken
Carl Elias Milliken (July 13, 1877May 1, 1961) was an American politician, and business executive. He served as the 51st Governor of Maine, and was the Chief Spokesman for the Motion Picture Association of America. Early life and education A native of Pittsfield, Maine, Milliken was the son of Charles Arthur Milliken and Phoebe Ellen Knowlton. Milliken graduated from Bates College in 1897. He went on to receive his master's degree from Harvard University in 1899, before moving to Island Falls, Maine to enter the lumber business. Early business career During the next six years, Milliken held positions as general manager of two lumber companies and an axe manufacturer and as president of a local telephone company. Political career His political career began in 1905, when he was elected to the Maine House of Representatives.
