William Graham Stanton (18 August 1917 – 6 December 1999) was a British author and radio playwright. __TOC__ Early life William Graham Stanton was born in Brightside, Sheffield, the seventh of eight children of John Stanton (a blacksmith) and his wife. His upbringing was in a working class Methodist tradition. His later writings about his experiences as a child described an upbringing rich in love, event and interest. Stanton's brothers, George and Arthur, were sent to Sheffield University. The depression of the 1930s denied Stanton's family the means to help him through university, and instead Stanton had to settle for sponsorship from the Sheffield Education Committee to train to be a teacher. Shortly after he qualified in 1939, war was declared and Stanton volunteered for the Army. William Sidney Stanton (September 18, 1885 – December 18, 1969) was an American character actor, whose career spanned the first twenty-five years of the sound film era. Stanton broke into the film industry at the very tail end of the silent film era in 1927, appearing in several short film, film shorts for Hal Roach Studios. He would debut in a feature film with a small role in Raoul Walsh's 1928 silent film, ''Sadie Thompson (film), Sadie Thompson'', starring Gloria Swanson, Lionel Barrymore, and Walsh. During the following 20 years he would appear in another 70 films, mostly in small and supporting roles. William Frank Stanton (October 16, 1918 – December 31, 1996) was an American humorist whose short stories and articles appeared in monthly magazines such as ''Reader's Digest'', ''Woman's Day'', ''Saturday Evening Post'' and ''The New Yorker''. He wrote four books, one of which was published posthumously, and hundreds of stories and articles. Adult life Stanton was born in Cleveland, Ohio, grew up nearby in Chagrin Falls, attended Princeton University, where he earned a degree in English, and then joined the Army Air Corps, where he served as a flight officer and flew glider planes in France during the Second World War. After the war, Stanton began working as a full-time freelance writer and moved to Bolinas, California. He returned to Chagrin Falls in the mid-fifties, still writing full-time, and participated in the Chagrin Falls Little Theater, where he acted lead roles, including as Charles in "Blithe Spirit". William Henry Stanton (July 28, 1843 – March 28, 1900) was an attorney, editor, politician and judge. He served as a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania's 12th congressional district, elected to fill the vacancy when Winthrop Welles Ketcham resigned and serving for three months from December 1876 to early March 1877. Since his retirement from the U.S. Foreign Service in 2012, he has consecutively served as a professor in Taiwan at National Tsinghua University, National Taiwan University, National Yang Ming University which became National Yang Ming Jiao Tung University, and in 2021 as Chair Professor at National Chengchi University. William Stanton (1639–1705) was an English mason and sculptor. He is known particularly for monumental masonry. He is often ferred to as Stanton of Holborn. Life He was son of Edward Stanton (d.1686), and nephew of the mason Thomas Stanton (d.1674).Rupert Gunnis, ''Dictionary of British Sculptors 1660-1851'' (revised version of 1951 edition), pp. 366–8. Thomas Stanton had set up a business adjacent to St Andrew Holborn in the first half of the seventeenth century. In 1663 William Stanton became free of the Masons' Company, and was Master of the Company in 1688 and 1689. He worked at Gray's Inn around 1672. In 1686 he became master-mason at Belton House, followed by a commission at Denham Place from 1689; and in 1701 was working at Stonyhurst. Over 30 of his church monuments are recorded. Naturalist Stanton was the first Jesuit to go from St. Louis to the Belize mission, in 1897.
