William Russell (bishop Of Sodor)
William Russell (died 1374) was a fourteenth-century Cistercian prelate. He appears to have begun his career as a Cistercian monk at Rushen Abbey on the Isle of Man (Mann), ascending to the rank of abbot there, before being elected Bishop of Mann and the Isles (Sodor). After traveling to Continental Europe for confirmation and consecration, avoiding a trip to the metropolitan in Norway, he returned to the Irish Sea as a legal bishop. A few things are known of his episcopate, particularly his activities in England and a series of provincial statutes apparently promulgated under his leadership. Sir William Russell, 1st Baronet, Of Chippenham
Sir William Russell, 1st Baronet, of Chippenham (before 1585 – 1654), was an English politician who sat as MP for New Windsor. He was a prominent member of several of the great trading companies. He was Treasurer of the Navy from 1618 until c. 1627, and was reappointed in 1630. He was created Baronet of Chippenham in 1630. Biography William was the son of William Russell of Surrey and Joan Sanders, and grandson of Maurice Russell of Yaverland, Isle of Wight. He travelled to Russia before attending Gray's Inn in 1631. Williams was sworn a free brother of the East India Company on 20 October 1609, "having formerly bought Sir Francis Cherry's adventure", and became a director on 5 July 1615. He was appointed a director of the North-West Passage Company in July 1612. William Russell (Kentucky Politician)
Colonel William Russell III (March 6, 1758 – July 3, 1825) was a soldier, pioneer, and politician from Virginia and Kentucky. He was born in Culpeper County, Virginia to William Russell and Tabitha (Adams) Russell. William Sr. was a prominent citizen of southwestern Virginia and served as a colonel in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. In 1773, the elder Russell took his family, including William Jr., westward in the first attempt to establish a permanent white settlement in Kentucky. The attempt, guided by Daniel Boone, was abandoned after a fatal attack by American Indians. Boone's son, James Boone, and Henry Russell, a son of William Russell, were captured and tortured to death by the Native Americans. William Russell (Virginia Politician)
William Russell (1735 – January 14, 1793) was an army officer and a prominent settler of the southwestern region of the Virginia Colony. He led an early attempt to settle the "Kentuckee Territory" (then part of Virginia). He was a justice of Fincastle County, Virginia. During the American Revolutionary War he fought in the Battle of Yorktown. While a representative in the Virginia House of Delegates, Russell was noted for his stance opposing the 1785 State of Franklin petition for admittance into the United States. Personal life William Russell was educated at the College of William & Mary. Russell's first wife was Tabitha Adams, who died in 1776. His second wife, Elizabeth Henry —a sister of Patrick Henry —survived him by more than thirty years. Elizabeth was important in the early history of the Methodist Church in America. Sir William Anthony Bowater Russell (born 15 April 1965, London) is a British financier who served as the 692nd Lord Mayor of the City of London from 2019 to 2021. Biography Educated at Eton and Durham University, graduating B.A., Russell started his career in financial services at First Boston in 1987, and joined Merrill Lynch in 1992, working in Hong Kong, New York and London, before leaving in 2006 for public service. Lieutenant-General Sir William Russell, 2nd Baronet (5 April 1822 – 19 March 1892), was a British Army officer who served in the Crimean War and in the suppression of the Indian Rebellion of 1857, and then became a Liberal Party politician. William Russell, 8th Duke of Bedford (1 July 1809 – 27 May 1872) was a British Whig politician. He was the son of Francis Russell, 7th Duke of Bedford and his wife Anna Maria Stanhope. Russell was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford and was member of parliament (MP) for Tavistock (which had been represented by members of the Russell family intermittently since 1640) from 1832 to 1841. He died in 1872, aged 62, unmarried and childless and was buried in the 'Bedford Chapel' at St. Michael's Church, Chenies, Buckinghamshire. William Russell (9 November 1798 – 30 January 1850) of Brancepeth Castle in County Durham was a British Whig politician. He sat in the House of Commons between 1822 and 1832. Life He was the son of Matthew Russell and his wife Elizabeth Tennyson, and grandson of the wealthy William Russell of Brancepeth Castle. He was educated at Eton College and matriculated at St John's College, Cambridge in 1818. In politics Russell was elected at a by-election in 1822 as one of the two Members of Parliament (MPs) for borough of Saltash in Cornwall. He held that seat until the 1826 general election, when he was returned as an MP for the borough of Bletchingley in Surrey. He resigned the Bletchingley seat in 1827 (by taking the Chiltern Hundreds) to stand at a by-election for County Durham. William Congreve Russell (15 April 1778 – 1850) was a Whig politician in England. Russell was the son of Thomas Russell, of Moor Green, Moseley, Worcestershire (now Birmingham), by his second wife, Mary Garner. He was commissioned a captain when the North Worcestershire Volunteers were formed in September 1803. Sir William Russell, 1st Baronet, of Charlton Park (29 May 1773 – 26 September 1839) was a Scottish physician. Life Born at Edinburgh, he was the sixth son of John Russell of Roseburne, near Edinburgh, a writer to the signet, and uncle to Daniel Eliott. After taking the degree of M.D. at Edinburgh, he went to Calcutta. where he acquired a large medical practice. In London for the cholera epidemic, he was created a baronet on 18 February 1832 for his medical services, and in April was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. Lord William Russell
Lord William Russell (20 August 1767 – 5 May 1840) was a member of the British aristocratic Russell family and longtime Member of Parliament. He did little to attract public attention after the end of his political career until, in 1840, he was murdered in his sleep by his valet. Life Russell was the posthumous child of Francis Russell, Marquess of Tavistock, eldest son of John Russell, 4th Duke of Bedford. He was the youngest brother of Francis Russell, 5th Duke of Bedford, and John Russell, 6th Duke of Bedford, and uncle of Francis Russell, 7th Duke of Bedford. Russell married Lady Charlotte Villiers, eldest daughter of George Bussy Villiers, 4th Earl of Jersey, on 11 July 1789; they had seven children. Lady Charlotte died in 1808.
